I like the cow story. I also like bells. How many things are still being done exactly the way they were done 1500 years ago? Not many. We have a university in my town, and they have an "old" gothic revival tower with bells that ring the hour (old in the US means more than 100 years old, which is not old at all) - but they are fake bells, just a recording. Not the same thing at all.

What a rotten Ugly American you had. Think of the money and trouble he would have saved if he had just checked on whether there were bells in your town before he moved there. All he had to do was stay in a local B&B for a week before buying a house.

I am a lifelong rabid Anglophile. I am the only American I know who can recite the entire list of English Kings and Queens since Alfred the Great, including the names of their spouses and the major events of their reigns. I am addicted to watching "Escape to the Country" on YouTube, and I have just discovered "Restoration Home", also on YouTube, also the Historical Farm series. If I only had about £1 million I would move to the UK in a heartbeat. I'd like a little bungalow on the outskirts of Salisbury, maybe a converted barn. I actually fell in love with a house on Season 13 of ETTC that was a 14th century monastic building in Buckinghamshire that was once part of Snelshall Priory. It cost £850,000 , and needed about £300,000 worth of updating. Sigh! https://uploads.disquscdn.c...I went to Leicester in 2015 to watch them rebury King Richard III. Stayed there a week. I really like Leicester, I could live there. I very nearly didn't go home.

I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it, it is very appropriate.
