College administrations routine foist unwanted speakers at commencement ceremonies. The students have no say in the matter, so all they can do is loudly boo the asshats.
Happily for New College, the current crop of woke communist students who enrolled in the pre-Rufo era will soon have either graduated or transferred to some leftist hellhole in another state, replaced by hundreds of Real American footballers busily paying PhDs in India to write their assignments for them.
When a billionaire speaks, the world stills to listen. Unless it doesn’t, and then it’s an outrageous, disrespectful, shameful abomination. Billionaires are premium citizens! They have things to tell you, or sell you, that can make you billionaires too! Ok, fine. I guess you don’t want your own TD Ameritrade Rock Financial subprime mortgage factory. Then you won’t get one.
Students will “learn how to think – not just what to think,”
At least they admit they're telling the students what to think.
Back in the 1970s, when I was an innocent young thing, I would have never believed in a million years that this is what it would be like in 2024. And that's AFTER the murder of students at Kent State, the murders of Martin Luther King Jr., Bobby Kennedy, and other political leaders on the left, and Nixon's resignation and disgraceful lack of trial and prison time.
I was so hopeful when Jimmy Carter was elected. Reagan made me queasy, Iran-Contra made me queasy, but I never imagined this. I'm tired.
I fled the country for a year not long after Reagan was elected. Like you, I never imagined this. I kept waiting for the pendulum to swing back from the vulture capitalism and satanic panic of the 80s. There have been some bright spots (like gay marriage) but I'm tired. And furious.
In school they never taught us that vegetarianism was advocated by Pythagoras and the Roman philosopher Porphyry. Then again in the 1960's people believed that if you didn't eat meat you could die of anemia.
Petey-boy (as we Nebraskans refer to him) didn't start TD Ameritrade. That was his Daddy. Petey wasn't considered good enough to take over Ameritrade or the Cubs, so Daddy spent a chunk of $$$ buying the state's governorship. The Governor's mansion was too tacky for Petey's family so Nebraskans were stuck with paying for State Troopers to drive him from and to Omaha every day. We also had to pay for them traveling with him to most Cubs home games. Petey's biggest moments as Governor were buying rural seats in the Unicameral so he could get his bills passed. Being Governor got boring pretty quickly so the Ricketts family bought a U.S. Senate seat and Petey got to move to D.C. We haven't heard from him since then. Although I've seen some campaign ads for him so he must be up for election again.
For those who are not familiar with Stephen King's book, "The Stand", it's set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has coalesced into two camps, one of which is ruled by the Antichrist, Randall Flagg.
At one point, the head of the Antichrist Air Force is yelling at his assistant, who says, "Why bother? We've got no pilots and two guys who aren't even CLOSE to soloing."
`
At some point -- probably long after Puss in Boots has retired rich to a nice clean blue state -- this kind of anti-intellectualism is gonna come back and bite them in their collective ass.
Sooner or later, they're gonna need SOMEBODY who can fly a plane, or take out an appendix, or build a bridge, and everybody with the wherewithal to do those things (or learn how to do them) will have long since fled to states or countries where they don't have to live with a sword hanging over their heads.
"Owning the libs" is OK, I suppose, if that's what floats your boat, but eventually someone needs to DO something.
Is this school considered so much of a wingnut place that students can't transfer? Do their classes not count towards a degree somewhere else? If I had had the misfortune to end up there, I'd leave ASAP, given the opportunity.
Speaking as someone who did so, it's much harder to get into any given school as a transfer student than as a freshman. Schools accept very few transfer students. If you don't mind going to a school that largely guarantees admission, it'll be easier, but if you have a particular school in mind that is even remotely picky about admission, it'll be a slog, and probably expensive, thanks to fees of various types that are thrown into the mix.
Aw. Mr. Ricketts getting all pearl clutchy. Bless his heart.
Ah but do they vote?
Jeering really doesn’t accomplish anything.
Registering voters, mailing postcards, gathering signatures on petitions, phone banks, all make a difference…
And most of all..
Vote out every republican.

“I hate it, but they really don’t care what I have to say.” Are all billionaires this tuned in to the youngs?
It's funny how conservatives are all for a liberal arts degree when it is what they think it should be.
Wonder how this squares with the drones who have been convinced that a liberal arts degree is worthless by 20+ years of Republican propaganda

So, "AI" stands for "All-Indian"?
Likey

The 1970s fooled us all.

Me too, but I had joined the Army in September and I ended up fleeing to crapping in a hole in Bavaria for three years.

Harsh, but fair!

Pregnant women are already suffering those consequences.
Stupid people who won't know that they are stupid are dangerous.
𝘐𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘺 was filled with them.
"Idiocracy" was fuckin' Utopia compared to this shit show.
At least in "Idiocracy" they WANTED the smart guy to run things.
Also, Guitar Army was pretty awesome.
Ta, Gary. Ron DeathSentence aimed for New College and shot himself in the anatomy.

Welp, then I guess the Free Market has spoken.
I’ve read both Toni Morrison and Plato and somehow my has not exploded.
Btw, who wants to tell Ron DeSantis that Plato was really into boy-boy fucking and talks about it in a few of his dialogues?
Yeah, if there's any viewpoint and opinions that are underrepresented in 2024 America, it's old, rich, white guys.
It's not like the world hasn't been WALLPAPERED with their beliefs for the past 2000 years.
