The smile is photoshopped, I believe. He was an incredible hero, and the March to the Sea was conducted, I understand, with great discipline -- they destroyed property ruthlessly but there was little or no mistreatment of civilians. This is remarkable:
VI. As for horses, mules, wagons, &c., belonging to the inhabitants, the cavalry and artillery may appropriate freely and without limit, discriminating, however, between the rich, who are usually hostile, and the poor or industrious, usually neutral or friendly. Foraging parties may also take mules or horses to replace the jaded animals of their trains, or to serve as pack-mules for the regiments or brigades. In all foraging, of whatever kind, the parties engaged will refrain from abusive or threatening language, and may, where the officer in command thinks proper, give written certificates of the facts, but no receipts, and they will endeavor to leave with each family a reasonable portion for their maintenance.
I very much like the way NY (or at least NYC) does voting: you show up, they have your signature from the last time you voted, and you give them another signature right there on the spot. They eyeball it to see if it's close enough, and you're good to go. You'd have to practice lots and lots of different signatures, and be able to execute them all on demand, to do any serious frauding.I don't think there are all that many voters who can only produce an "X", and you'd have to know an awful lot of them to impersonate them at the polls.
Paper ballots are scanned, so you get both computerized counting and a hard copy in case of any questions. Adequate security beyond the scanning stage is something the voters just have to hope for, but that's going to be true of anything short of manual counting by a small army of worker bees -- and even then you have to trust that their numbers are securely toted up.
