I've traveled through South Memphis a number of times in recent years and can attest to the existence of open crime, especially in South Memphis near the airport and major rail and logistics centers. The crimes I've observed are mostly vice crimes including prostitution and drug dealing, and I've observed Memphis PD officers ignore it. I never felt personally in danger, as I wasn't a potential customer. Attempts to push an Interstate Highway through the area have left much of it in a shambles. The Southside is not the whole of the city. They need police reform and better economic opportunity in those neighborhoods, not militarized policing.

Memphis is nearly 80% black. I am 100% positive the citizens in Memphis do not see this as an “opportunity” The bigots in power see it that way. My former home, I am broken over seeing what I’m seeing happening there.

I'm still mad about this article. Miller's preying on people's concerns about crime, real and imagined, is the story, not the few who fell for it.

I get NPR's morning news on Amazon Alexa. Imagine how I felt 3 mornings ago when the news reader used the term "Democrat leader" instead of Democratic.

Since DOGE eliminated their funding, the reporting has gone down the toilet.

NPR has done this a few times that I've heard, and I mostly actively avoid NPR anymore. It started with failing to correct Republicans when they were overt and obnoxious about never saying "Democratic." Now NPR's anchors and reporters do it also.

This. NPR and PBS need more member funding than ever. And although they're often dependent on businesses supporting them as well, individual letters from people cancelling their memberships get sent up the line rather quickly.

Take it from someone who worked at PBS stations during Newt's [spits] attempt to control CPB and Dubya's attempts to turn it into right-wing propaganda.

Great article. I’m enraged. Emailed NPR with your article as a guide on this trash fascism enabling “journalism”

Opportunity? From what, obeying in advance, not challenging Trump sending in the national guard to police your safe community? What advantage do they gain? Does ICE shoot less bullets at towns that comply?

This is why I regretfully stopped listening to NPR ten years ago. Never looked back.

I took a ten year break but recently started listening during commute. Pure propaganda all the time. About as "left" as the most conservative 1980s cop.
