Hi. 30 year employee with the NYS judiciary here. The only real judges in the nomination pool are Lasalle, Jeffrey Oing & Edwina Jackson-Mendelson. They were trial court judges for years before being elevated to the intermediate appellate court. Based on background, they're the only serious choices for the chief judge job. Any of them would do. Lasalle gets the tip because he's the presiding judge of the Appellate Division, 2nd Dept, which is the largest & busiest of NY's four Appellate Divisions.
Both Lasalle and Oing got unjustified mud slung at them after they were nominated. All of us who have worked with them are pissed about it. The misrepresentations about Lasalle are particularly galling. The critics quoted three decisions that he didn't even author. He simply concurred & signed on with the majority, as appellate judges do. It was dishonest not to quote his own decisions. He's written many.
It's pretty clear that the controversy is being ginned up by party operatives who are carrying water for some other favored, underqualified candidate. I'm not going to hazard a guess as to who (though I could).
For now, we're happy that Janet Difiore and her henchman Larry Marks are gone. But after several years of pandemic court closures, we're in need of competent administration. Let's hope they end the political BS soon.
