Now it's Gold ButteNational Monument;image via Sen. Harry Reid's website Some environmental nice-time for America, courtesy of Barack Obama, with a big assist from Sen. Harry Reid: Wednesday, President Obama declared two new national monuments, protecting 1.35 million acres in Utah and 300,000 acres in Nevada. Needless to say, the drill-, log-, and strip-mine-everything crowd, including legislators from both states, are already vowing to undo the new monuments, whining that Obama is killing jobs, but presidential power to declare national monuments and parks is pretty broadly defined by the
Living adjacent to the Organ Mountains in New Mexico, and these were designated Monument Status a few years ago, was so pleased to read this, now if only that status remains intact for generations to come. Lets Hope!
About 11 or 12 years ago, the ex and I were invited to a four day event wedding on Flathead Lake, Montana, at a dude ranch. I agreed to go as long as we could rent a car and put on some very serious mileage: Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Custer State Park, Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial (in progress), Devil's Tower, Ten Sleep Canyon, Ft. Niobrara Wildlife Refuge, The Badlands. Quite a trip. I'm still dazzled.
One of my arguments up here was over snowmobile trails. I pointed out to the person who was ranting about them that: a) snowmobilers in this state pay a hefty fee on their snowmobiles to maintain the trails; b) they work at trail maintenance during the summer; c) everyone else uses their trails during the summer; and d) they actually spend time and money up here during the winter. None of which was true for the other winter sports enthusiasts he was touting as alternatives.
I have no sympathy with weasels like that who helped create the monster and only now find out it will eat sensible conservatives as well as liebruls. Like the capitalists who backed Hitler because they thought he would be their puppet.
They do the maintenance around here because the horses and mules they use are able to haul in gravel and fill and whatnot where heavy vehicles can't go and people can't carry as much as is needed. Much less environmental impact that way.
Attention ranchers and oilmen: If you really don't want the feds to be involved in these decisions, then be consistent and refuse all federal subsidies.

1997... So prescient (president? Not!!)
Can't President Obama just make all of the Blue States one big National Monument and protect our way of life for future generations to appreciate?

Is there some way to protect SCOTUS seats through this law? they're all pretty much antiquities, too.

Less damage than ATVs I am sure. And you can dodge horse poop pretty easily.
