Whenever politicians or telescreen talking heads use the expression "We need to have a national conversation," they really mean "I need more airtime to get reelected/a raise on my next contract."

Because a "national conversation" is cheap. What's risky or expensive is a president asking for a war and Congress voting for or against it.

I'm sure the Republicans will do the responsible thing and insist on tax increases to pay for this. Dubya <strike>found</strike> borrowed $2,000,000,000,000 to spend on Dubya's war Iraq and Afghanistan which turned out to be a big problem for Dubya when the economy went bad under Dubya.

I am sick of the glib metaphor “boots on the ground.” We are disrupting and sometimes ending people's lives. We are "putting Americans in combat", "sending soldiers to war". And, more to the point IMO, "fighting someone else's war".
