$93 dollars on Saturday, when the grandkids came up. I was doing a little indulgent buying (sour worm and peach ring gummy packs at $5 each, two packs of popsicles at $5 each), but it was mostly regular food. Hot dogs, strawberries, bubbly water, crackers, greens, and so on. $93 dollars.

Three or four years ago, if my husband and I spent $120 in a week for groceries, including pet food, it was a lot. Now, it's not unusual to spend $220.

"revoke Chinese student visas"

`

Why would any student from any country want to come here? Setting aside for the moment the consideration that they could be disappeared without notice to a concentration camp, what could they possibly learn here? That dinosaur bones were planted by Satan to trick Christians?

I watch this with horror and great sadness.

I've worked with Chinese expatriate scholars in tech for many years, and many of them are friends. They possess great skill and great work ethic, and the US stands to lose both their considerable work and their goodwill as the result of the xenophobic asshole's election-to-stay-out-of-prison.

This cuts off the US' nose to spite its face - a self-own of epic proportions, driven by racist boomers' fears that they'll be treated the way they treated non-white people.

What is grocery?

The Mad King, who coined the term "groceries" if you missed it, has not yet provided us with clarification on just what these "groceries" are, we are all still waiting for the Dear Leader to tell us just what these "groceries" are. King Arty Deals is a little busy at the moment scumbling up an "insurrection" to crush with His Personal Bodyguard, which used to be known as the US Army.

"clarification on just what these "groceries" are"

`

It comes from a very old-fashioned word, but it's a very good word, it's "Gro", meaning food that is grown, and "Ceries", meaning things that fit in a brown paper grocery bad, including but not limited to food, hot daughters, Happy Meals, former friends with a black eye, and Hannibal Lecter.

I always thought it was from 'gro' as in Miracle-Gro combined with a misspelling of 'cerise' as 'ceries' meaning a sweet deal (from cerise, sweet cherry).

Obvs my fractured etymology was wrong, and I defer to your superiorly etymologized esplanation! :p

As much as your version delights me, it does not account for the loaf of French bread visible out of the top of the brown paper grocery bag.

"As part of the trade framework, the people said, the temporary rare-earths licenses Beijing is expected to start issuing immediately will mostly involve elements used in manufacturing electric vehicles, wind turbines, consumer electronics and military equipment."

The licenses are good for 6 months only after China issues them. Leverage.

There is a supply of rare earths here in the US. Somewhere in CA (of course). The one criticism I have of Hillary Clinton's work as Sec State is she approved sale of the mine to Chinese interests, who promptly shut it down. Mines are much easier to shut than reopen, by the way.

Apparently there's 18 million tons of lithium under the Salton Sea in the geothermal brine. Eventually we'll probably get around to extracting it. After we fight about who gets rich.

Grocery, which is an old fashioned word, doesn't matter to the MAGAt set. They're jizzing themselves over the cruelty being forced upon undocumented workers, and more than makes up for having to forego the name brand Hamburger Helper.

I think they really do believe that immigrants are taking what should be theirs. Whether it's jobs or government benefits. They seem to believe that if they can just get rid of takers, their benefits will be enhanced.

The boomers I know don't think that.

They think that there will be more PoC than whites and that they'll become a minority.

They have seen how they (boomers et al) treat minorities and live in fear of being treated as a minority.

fsck 'em.

They're an empathy-free zone and their concerns are solely about preserving white hegemony.

All the while the grisly plotters in the Party of Treason are preparing to pull the rug out from under the "low information voters" who vote overwhelmingly to get their subsidies swallowed by the much more important business of insuring amazing ROI to the billionaires who fund the Treason Party. And they are so goddamn dumb that they never will figure out what happened.
