I read a story about Villanueva in the New Yorker. It could be the voters do want to get tough on crime, because that guy is at least criminal-adjacent.

... annoying English gentry who'd been to India for a year or two, and spent the rest of their lives boring everyone with their opinions on how the Empire should run.Obligatory Gandhi quote:

Kinnoch: With respect, Mr. Gandhi, without British administration, this country would be reduced to chaos.Gandhi: Mr. Kinnoch, I beg you to accept that there is no people on Earth who would not prefer their own bad government to the good government of an alien power.Brigadier: My dear sir! India is British. We're hardly an alien power![silence]Emphasis mine.

His election slogan was "Kill 'Em and Slab 'Em!" Kind of a one-stop-shop?

I prefer the tiny house solution currently being tried in Albuquerque. Many similarities.

Yeah, I know that. But it seems like those two offices might sometimes be in conflict with each other.

I have to say we have a great sheriff. Progressive, independent and responsive. No SWAT, no plainclothes, no drug wars. Mind your own business and don’t hurt anybody and he and his deputies will leave you in peace. Fuck around and you will definitely find out. We will be re-electing him again! On a sad note, his predecessor and mentor recently passed away. RIP SHERIFF BOB! You were a helluva guy and a friend to all.

Lotta love for a sheriff! Our sheriff is probably the crookedest guy in the whole county. At least the laziest. And, definitely, the most racist.

So that upper line = the lower line + the 20-35% who only worried a fair amount?

If he cares so much about housing the homeless, as a developer, he could have built a lot of housing for $40 million.

IK,R? It’s been that way here for 40 years. Started with Hunter Thompson running for sheriff in the 70s.

Ta, Dok. We don't have recalls in NY, so NYC is stuck with Eric Adams. Shamefully, we're having two primaries this summer.

What do the homeless have to say about this kind of solution? Because homelessness seems to be one of those situations where "nothing about us without us" really needs to apply.

Where would couples fit in this?

Ex San Franciscan here ... SF politics are weird. AAPI influence + a whole buttload of money + low turnout race = election. 10 points is 10 points but not the original spanking. It's not like London Breed (mayor) is going to appoint some fire breathing LAW'n'ORDER BACK THE BLUE candidate. SF is still SF.

I wanted to note that in the Alameda County Sheriff race, the incumbent was defeated by one of his reform-minded deputies.

I am also delighted that Anne Marie Schubert's (Sacramento DA who ran for state) campaign laid an egg. I have been subscribed to the Bee since the East Area Rapist aka Original Night Stalker got pulled in ... not impressed.

Getting rid of an incumbent in a position like that is always noteworthy, but yeah, that guy.
