I was very cranky yesterday and want to share something less nihilist.

Here is a WaPo report on how important it it to get people to change their behavior. It discusses how small things, like Biden riding his bike, changes norms and thus people's behaviors. Maybe it was linked here too, but anyway, hope is a thing worth holding:

Between this shit, a UN employee actually holding a hostage in Gaza, and Iran heading the human rights council, I have lost all respect for an institution I once thought fabulous.

It is just a shit stain and a corrupt cousins theme park.

he's gone full disingenuous - and also full victim grievance - when we treat him like an idiot because that is what he insists he is (not in the pergorative way, in the knowledge way) then he'll whine about that too

You fuck just one oil well, and everyone calls you “Oilfucker.”

Depending on how well endowed you are, if you don't actually 'reach' oil, you're technically an Oilwellfucker......

We can always play with words here. You are a good politician and you know how to use words better than I do. I am a businessman; I am centered around delivery and actions

With that attitude, he's probably a pretty shitty businessman. Leadership in business requires clear communications, negotiation, and salesmanship.

in which he claimed that there was “no science” showing that fossil fuels must be phased out in order to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F) above preindustrial levels.

Doesn't the science say we're already there, or that no amount of phasing out is going to keep us below 1.5 degrees and we'll be lucky to hold 2.0?

I will never understand how THIS conference was held in THAT place and presided over by THAT guy. Come on. How much money changed which hands to make that happen?

The cave thing really is an ancient trope of climate deniers, going back nearly 40 years: https://tritonstation.com/2023/12/03/cop28-president-not-even-trying-to-hide-his-obvious-bias/

Ah, yes. Another climate summit wherein big oil gets to "but how will I keep making billions?" their way into the conversation. Yay, earthlings!

Hey, speaking of oppressive petrostates in the Middle East, here's Vlad P. bringing a brace of Su-35s along with him to the UAE. Nevermind all the gross Putin fanboying in the comments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FNrYud1T74

Back in grad school we were writing skits for an end of year comedy show. My favorite was a version of the song "Hey, Jude" but it was about Jude the Obscure. "Hey Jude, don't be obscure, you taught yourself Greek in the back of a milk cart..." something like that.

Anyhow, someone had this idea for Billy Budd, Goatfucker, where instead of punching Clegg they catch him fucking a goat. The final line was Billy Budd, right before they hang him saying, "They catch you fucking one goat, and you're 'Billy Budd, Goatfucker'"

Seems like Al Jaber really can't do the math on climate change.

Oh he can do the math, and the math shows very wealthy leaders of oil producing countries losing bigly. Nevermind the long term benefits of having a livable planet.

This is just like if you appointed the Saudi ambassador to the UN to lead the Human Rights Commission advisory council.

Oh, wait- they did that too.

The UN is not a world government. It’s more like a congeries of cats.

Like many organizations the rank and file working at the UN probably do the best work that they can, but the higher ups are all about wheeling and dealing.

The rank and file literally held a hostage in Gaza, and it is apparently mostly Hamas on the payroll there.
