Gotta stop you there. If you ship any firearm to anybody else, even if you already own the gun, your gun needs to go through an FFL where you do have to go through a background check. The only way around that is in person transfers in certain states

My dad gave my minor child an automatic weapon* a while back. I was shocked that it was all perfectly legal except for flying with it, which I had to do, and which made me so nervous I spilled gun bits everywhere in the ticket counter at the airport, but the Wyoming airport people were totally unphased, so I'm guessing lots of people travel with guns. Unless properly transferred or promptly reported stolen, gun owners should be civilly and criminally responsible for how their guns are used.
Even if reported stolen, if you lose a gun, you can still be held liable.
And require insurance.
