I'd like to know what the percentage is for people who commit family violence actually receive jail time. Do Blue states send more people found guilty of domestic assault to jail as opposed to Red states? And is there a correlation between repeat offenses and the severity of sentences? Just something to chew on. I can sympathize with someone who has PTSD, but the buck has to stop somewhere. And honestly, why are so many elected GOP officials clinically off the wall? I feel like people in politics have a lot of eyes on them. Why is there no radar from their constituents? I'm guessing Old Boys Club. Sorry but it's always erupting in Red states.

Annnnd in OK yesterday a woman was denied resentencing under the new "survivors act" after 27 years in prison for killing her abusive rapist husband.... Fucking shameful. There was documented abuse and rape, many police reports and the law now says that evidence must be taken into account. But the judge decided that SHE has not served enough time yet. She will be eligible for parole in 3 years. It is DANGEROUS to be a woman in a red state - ESPECIALLY OKLAHOMA 😡

How sad. Women are never ever ever going to get over on men in Red states. If a man rapes, fair game. A woman says no thanks, unforgivable. SUBMIT!

Sigh. Again with the elementary misconception of the basic premise of the Bible.

There seems to be widespread thinking, that because the Bible (at least in the US) is referred to as The Good Book and The Word of God - both of which are wrongly applied, since those terms are not used within the Bible to described itself - everyone in the Bible must be a virtuous person and that God must approve of everything they do.

This is completely false. The Bible asserts than humans are - gulp - Sinners!!! Their nature is essentially bad, they are prone to violence, and they need to change their ways. It made me chuckle quietly when a non commenter recently observed that it seemed like a pretty good record of how people do in fact behave. That is exactly what it is meant to be, but I didn't then ask that non commenter if they included themselves in that assessment. Atheists are prone to get upset when called sinners, and insist they not always behave perfectly, but they are on the whole Good People. So why do object to the Bible because it recounts people doing bad things.? That is like objecting to the media because it reports crime.

The real question that atheists should considering is, what are the ethical implications of Evolution. If we evolved, rather than being created, did we evolve to be violent? Answer, yes. Human beings have been doing terrible things long before the development of Religion, and certainly long before the Bible was written. Stop focusing so narrowly on your own society and one highly developed religion. and learn more of other myths and spiritual beliefs other beliefs. You will find accounts of other gods and people to be equally violent and "immoral."

If your stated atheism consists of only throwing up your hands and wailing "I don't believe in a Good God that lets awful things happen" and naively talking as if people will suddenly start being nicer if we just get rid of the Bible, you are a reductionist thinker, who doesn't want to face the real facts of your alternative professed belief. Criticising "bad" things in the Bible, and insisting on pointing out when someone is charged with a crime, they call themselves a Christian, is bias confirmation.

There is currently a big shortage of science teachers in the US. All atheists should be applying for those jobs, then they can teach people the correct facts about Evolution. Science will stop domestic violence.

But before you do spend some time reading Stephen Jay Gould's The Mismeasurement of Man, about race sciences and intelligence testing. Oh but you don't believe that now? It's not Real Science so we'll just toss it in the trashcan of history.

Not so fast, says Gould. It was called Science at the time, was regarded as science, and after all, if you're going to accept anyone who calls themselves a Christian at face value, you have to accept what is labelled Science at face value. Scientific theories and discoveries, even if subsequently decided to be wrong, have real consequences on real people's lives, and Scientists need to take responsibility for what is done in the name of Science., including what is done in the past. The Bible is a closed book, meaning it cannot be changed or rewritten to take out the bits we don't like. Too many advocates of Science want it to be an open book, constantly rewriting history to make it look always right and good.

Scientists invented vaccines - a Good Thing. They also invented plastic and pesticides. Scientists work for giant food manufacturers, inventing non nutritional foodstuffs to addict us. Scientists work for Monsanto to produce GE seeds. Scientists have gone into court and written papers to defend tobacco and petroleum companies. Scientists have been responsible for both vindicating the innocent, and wrongfully convicting them .All have consequences.

Read also about Sir Cyril Burt and Werner Braune - scientists both and acknowledged as such, though some want to forget about them now.

Stop pointing your finger at Them and maybe consider your own sins. Remember the Bad Old Days, when the newspapers would print the race of an accused? Bias confirmation for racists who could say "See, they're all criminals." Ask if maybe you're just overgeneralising from some negative experience, by labelling a different group bad, then happily pointing out every media incident involving Them? Skin color is unalterable, and can be seen. Anyone can say they are a Christian and you will never know, because you cannot read their mind.

“Rep. Burns says that the incidents were the result of his not having gotten help for his PTSD, which he acquired while serving in the military.”

Doesn’t this call into question pretty much anything he did as a law enforcement officer with untreated PTSD?

If the DNC would send money to Oklahoma, and other Midwestern states, we would be able to contest every seat in the Oklahoma legislature instead of mostly those in the major urban hubs of OKC and Tulsa. There are a lot of progressive and liberal people in Oklahoma, but without funds and support from the national Democratic Party, the state will remain ruby red.

Oklahoma, 50th in education and 1st in domestic violence. I wonder if there is a connection.
