Old White Guys Try To Explain Abortion

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It's your Sunday show rundown!

Michael is out, so I'm taking over your Sunday Show Rundown. This week everyone was talking about those awful abortion laws worming their way through state legislatures. As usual, most of the men were tripping on their dicks while trying to talk about vag. Luckily, there's enough women around to ladysplain things.

 Bernie Sanders went on Meet the Press for the first time in FOREVER and played his greatest hits for all the kids. Sanders criticized Joe Biden's environmental policy (which is literally just " beat Trump "), stating that it wasn't "good enough." Sanders is right! (NO FIGHTING.)

SANDERS: Beating Trump is not good enough. You have to beat the fossil fuel industry, you have to take on all the forces of the status quo who do not want to move this country to energy efficiency and sustainable energy.

But then Chuck Todd asked Bernie a loaded question about women getting "sex-selective" abortions and the whole interview went off the rails. Bernie struggled to answer the dumbass question and came across looking stupid despite having spent the better part of the last week in Alabama railing against abortion bans. 

TODD: Do you believe there should be any restrictions on abortion in law?

SANDERS: I think that is a decision that should be made by the woman and her physician. I think many of -- what people are doing is creating a, sadly, political issue out of a medical issue. So the decision about women should be able to control their own body, and those decisions are made by a doctor.

TODD: Are you at all concerned though about this idea that people may try to worry about the sex of a child, or essentially look at that -- are those type of restrictions on abortion something that you're open to?

SANDERS: That's not a -- I wouldn't use it, a restriction -- that's an issue that society has got to deal with, and it is of concern.

TODD: How would you deal with that in the law?

SANDERS: I don't know how, at this particular point, I would deal with it, but that is an issue that we have really got to deal with.

Here's the full interview, but let's do some SCIENCE FACTS before moving on. The notion of "sex-selection" abortions is a red herring pushed by Jesus freaks who think every sperm is sacred. These crackpots will argue a cultural practice from rural East and South Asia is analogous to some place like Arizona because of Mexican anchor babies. Rolling Stone notes that this is a strawman argument used by anti-abortion wingnuts in order to make it more difficult for women of color to get abortions, let alone access to reproductive healthcare services. TLDR: Chuck Todd needs to shut the fuck up (as usual).

Instead of letting some idiotic think tank score cheap points with stupid questions, Kasie Hunt dug up a speech by South Carolina state Rep. Nancy Mace. Last month Mace revealed her own rape and spoke out against the state's fetal heartbeat bill when lawmakers tried to remove language protecting victims of rape and incest. The full segment is worth watching since it details how and why state legislatures are rushing these bills through without caring thatvictimsare being cast as criminals.

Over on Fox News, Chris Wallace trotted out a shitty Facebook ad from Restoration PAC, a slimy conservative group that's calling Democrats "the party of death" for their support of abortion during an interview with 2020 Democratic candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Instead of taking the bait, Klobuchar flipped the script by noting abortions were legal, and that Fox News viewers are being spoon-fed lies while Trump runs around calling doctors baby killers.

KLOBUCHAR: If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade I would make sure that we are codifying Roe v. Wade into law. But, I think it's really important for the Fox News viewers to understand exactly what's happening here.

These aren't nuances anymore. This is a case where the laws that they have passed in these states would actually make it so that no one could get an abortion. And at the same time while we've reduced the number of abortions because of making contraception more available all over the country through Planned Parenthood and other ways, they've also moved to defund Planned Parenthood.

So this is dangerous, it is a place that we have never seen. I think people have always warned that this could happen, and it's actually happened. When I talk to people, whether they are pro-choice, or personally opposed to abortion, a lot of them, Chris, don't think we should go this direction. Seventy-three percent of Americans don't want to overturn Roe v. Wade. You have a situation here where they would actually put doctors in prison, 99 years. That's what the Alabama law says. This is a law that they passed that would mean if someone was raped, if a college student was raped, she wouldn't have a choice in that pregnancy from a rape. I don't think the majority of Americans are where the Republicans are on this issue right now.

Up against the wall, Wallace argued that Democrats "were not willing to see restrictions on late term abortions," noting that it's only one percent of all abortions then repeating Trump's bullshit "execute the baby" lie.

KLOBUCHAR: The president misled the American public. What he said at a rally was basically a doctor would be holding a baby, and kill, and kill that baby. That's illegal under the law. That is already a crime--

WALLACE: -- I understand the argument against infanticide, and that's an overstatement, what I'm asking you is are you OK with abortions after 24 weeks?

KLOBUCHAR: To protect the life and health of the mother, and I'm OK with that. But I just think it's really important, Chris, for your Fox viewers to know, because there's so much misinformation out there, that what these laws do is extreme. There are number of Republicans who said they are opposed to them. They are extreme.

Then you have the president misleading the public, and telling them that this is about basically killing a baby after a baby is born. That is not what this is about, that is a crime. So I think what people have to understand here is that we are at a point where a number, it is not just Alabama, this has happened in Ohio, this has happened in Missouri, this happened in Georgia, there's a law that's being passed in Michigan that the Democratic governor is going to veto. This is happening across the country, and people need to know what's really going on here. This is a violation of civil rights.

Moving over to ABC, Rep. Seth Moulton, one of the other Tim Ryans running in 2020, was able to get himself some airtime by announcing that he too had a plan to end climate change! Moulton told George Stephanopoulos that (if anyone remembers to vote for him) he'd create a "Federal Green Corps" to save the planet with trash collectors. The whole scheme sounds like Americorps in that it calls on people to clean up garbage in exchange for discounts on college or vocational schools. Moulton likens it to the GI Bill, presumably because it's full of diet socialism.

Like the other Tim Ryans running in 2020, Moulton is desperate to stand out. Aside from telling Americans to be Greenpeace Lanterns or whatever, he used the rest of his six minutes to remind everyone that he was a Marine and doesn't think we should fight ANOTHER war in the Middle East. Earlier this week, WaPo noted Moulton and Rep. Liz Cheney (R, Hell) got into a shouting match after Cheney and national security mustache John Bolton started fiddling around with their war boners during a classified briefing on Iran.

STEPHANOPOULOS: The Washington Post reported earlier this week that in a classified briefing Liz Cheney exaggerated the intelligence about the threat implied from Iran. Does that apply to the administration as well?

MOULTON: Well, it does. And I'm not going to discuss the contents of a classified briefing, but suffice it to say that Liz Cheney seems to think that this is a slam dunk and I disagree. I spoke with General Mattis recently, former Secretary of Defense, who when the Baghdad embassy was attacked in September decided the right course of action was not to send a new carrier group to the Gulf. Not to send 120,000 troops like the administration is contemplating because we need to avoid an incident like a Gulf of Tonkin incident -- that set off the Vietnam War. It would drag us into war.

Moulton's comments were an attempt to seem like more of a dove than DINO Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who appeared earlier in the show. Gabbard said a bunch of anti-war things that sounded very nice, but her appearance on Stephanopoulos was obviously an attempt to shoot down yetanother storyabout how her own 2020 campaign was (quite obviously) being pushed by pro-Putin Russophiles. 

STEPHANOPOULOS: In the past, you met with Assad, you defended Russian military operations in Syria, you opposed the arrest of Julian Assange, suggested that Russian election meddling is no worse than America's historically. Do you believe that Vladimir Putin is a threat to U.S. national security?

GABBARD: You know, it's unfortunate that you're citing that article, George, because it's a whole lot of fake news. What I am focused on is what is in the best interest of the American people, what is in the best interest of our national security, keeping the American people safe.

The Daily Beast story Gabbard dodged was all about how her 2020 bid has a number of very curious financial backers and supporters. Aside from all the pro-Russian connections, in the first three months of 2019 Gabbard also received cash from a guy convicted of skirting sanctions on Iran. She also shrugs off criticisms for her regular appearances on Joe Rogan and Tucker Carlson, and the support of white nationalists. That Gabbard called the report "fake news" isn't surprising; she said the exact same thing back in February when NBC revealed she had the support of Russian bots.

Meanwhile, over on CNN, Mitt Romney got all wishy-washy when Jake Tapper asked about Rep. Justin Amash's call to #IMPEACH. Romney said that the Mueller Report was almost as big and difficult to read as his binders full of women, and though he was "troubled," he ultimately didn't think we should impeach.

SEN. MITT ROMNEY: Well, I think every individual has to make their own judgment. I think it helps to actually have read the entire document. It's a long document. It took me two full days to get through it. And the second volume is a more difficult one to get through than the first. So, hopefully, more people read it. But I think there are a lot of people that want to reserve judgment until this has all played out. My own view is that Justin Amash has reached a different conclusion than I have. I respect him. I think it's a courageous statement.

As I read the report, I was troubled by it. It was very disappointing, for a number of reasons. But it did not suggest to me that this was time to call for impeachment…. I -- I don't think impeachment is the right way to go. I think, in part -- one of the things that is difficult in order to make a case for obstruction of justice or impeachment is whether or not there was intent. And when there's not an underlying crime, I think it's difficult to put together an effective case to prosecute for those crimes.
