When I lived in Cleveland in the late '90's, Charles Barkley was sued by a guy that he threw through a plate glass window. What happened was Barkley, Reggie Miller and a couple of other folks from US Men's Basketball team went out on the town after an exhibition game. Miller had a ladyfriend with him that evening who happened to be white, and some drunken asshole started saying a bunch of vile, racist shit to her. Barkley told the guy if he didn't shut up and leave he was going to throw him out. The guy doesn't shut up, so Barkley picks him up and throws him out the plate glass window, then peels off several hundred dollar bills and hands them to the bartender, apologizing for the damage.

Fast forward a couple of months, the case goes to trial. In the opening statement, his lawyer says "Now, you are going to hear some testimony about what my client said that evening. My client's actions are not what's on trial." Right there, I knew he lost the Cleveland jury. Sure enough, when the case was over and the Plain Dealer talked to a juror he was quoted to the effect "no man would let another man speak to a woman like that. We felt Mr. Barkley was generous in giving him the chance to leave first under his own power."

I bring this up because the Tim Ryan tweet, bluntly calling out the ghoulishness of Vance, seems like something that would play well to that juror and his peers. It has been over 20 years since I lived in Ohio, and I always lived in or near a big city, so I could be off-base. But Dolan and Ryan sound like the kind of politician Ohioans would elect to this sort off an office, and Mandel and Vance don't.
