Outraged Christians Demand To Speak To Netflix's Manager About Amazon Prime's 'Good Omens'
Also, 'Good Omens' is excellent and you should definitely watch it.
Back in May, the long-awaited adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens was finally released into the world ... and it was good. In fact, it was awesome and David Tennant should be in literally everything always. I liked it, critics liked it, and you will probably like it too, if you are a person with good taste in things.
But it isn't for everyone! Particularly the 20,000 angry Christians who signed a petition this week demanding that Netflix cancel the show, on account of how it insults God by giving God a lady voice and that it will make everyone think that "evil" is super great and awesome. The petition was created by an organization called the "Return to Order Campaign," which seeks to create an "organic Christian society" and fight "the abandonment of God and His law and the increasing public recognition of satanic acts, symbols and ideas."
The Netflix series "Good Omens," based on a book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, portrays the agents of Good and Evil as fighters in an arbitrary struggle devoid of meaning and truth. This series presents devils and Satanists as normal and even good, where they merely have a different way of being, and mocks God's wisdom in the following ways:
• An angel and demon are good friends, and are meant to be earth's ambassadors for Good and Evil respectively.
• This pair tries to stop the coming of the Antichrist because they are comfortable and like the earth so much.
• God is voiced by a woman.
• The Antichrist, who will oppose the Kingdom of God, is portrayed as a normal kid that has special powers and a mission to destroy the world which he doesn't really want to do.
• There are groups of Satanic "nuns" that are chosen to raise the Antichrist.
• The four riders of the Apocalypse, God's means of punishing sinful earth, are portrayed as a group of bikers.
In the end, this is a denial of Good and Evil: morality and natural law do not exist, just humanitarianism and an ultimately useless creed. This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable. We must show our rejection. Please sign our petition, telling Netflix that we will not stand silent as they destroy the barriers of horror we still have for evil.
There are, of course, a few problems with all of this. One being the fact that Neil Gaiman has said that he's not going to do a second season of Good Omens (which is a bummer, but it's understandable), which means it can't be "canceled." Terry Pratchett has been dead for four years, so he's probably not going to be able to help out with that either. The other is that Good Omens is not on Netflix, but rather on Amazon Prime. Given this, it is not entirely clear what they expect Netflix to do here. Do they want the CEO of Netflix to march on down to Amazon and go, "Excuse me, but we hear you have a show that these random people think is going to turn everyone into Satanists! Can you cancel it please, even though it was already not going to get a second season?"
Because that just seems weird.
It would also be very hypocritical given that Netflix currently owns both Lucifer (another Neil Gaiman-based series) and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina , both very good shows that one could argue "make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable," if one were so inclined. Of course, given that there aren't actually any "real" Satanists in the way organizations like "Return To Order" think there are "real" Satanists, these shows do not actually pose any threat to anything other than my productivity levels.
This is not the organization's only petition. They were also successful in getting nearly 5,000 people to sign a petition against the Satanic Temple's "Snaketivity" display at Michigan's State Capitol building last year.
Dears Sirs:
Satanism is not an American value. I am completely against the "Snaketivity" display. This is an attack on Christmas. It shocks the sentiments of decency and respect of every decent person. Please STOP it from being set up on the lawn of the State Capitol.
Oh, snakes. Always shocking the decency of decent people. Alas, whether "Return to Order" likes it or not, we do have freedom of speech in this country. This means that we are not going to be an "organic Christian society" and that fake Satanists can put "Snaketivity" displays up at the Michigan Capitol building and that Amazon Prime (or Netflix!) can make an awesome miniseries about an angel and a demon being friends and getting together to stop the apocalypse.

Some tv host, might have been Kimmel, sent a crew some years ago to interview tourists checking out the White House. Turns out most of them could recite the ingredients in a Big Mac flawlessly, but could not nail the Pledge of Allegiance.
"it was awesome and David Tennant should be in literally everything always"Um, hello, are Jon Hamm and Nick Offerman chopped liver?
