It takes about a half a day to learn how to march in unison; some of it is guiding to the guy next to you and in front of you, the rest is practicing (a.k.a. "marching").
Of course, my experience was among high-school-educated young men with the nads to enlist and the brains to get through the ASVAB, so maybe I'm expecting too much from these fine white (although I swear the one dude's eyes look Asian...) patriots.
My experience was playing in the high school marching band. It's the same whichever organization that one is in, and you're correct about the guiding, spacing, and marching. What makes it interesting is not getting your instrument in someone else's space while marching and playing, and not getting too close to the girls' flag corp. Those flags will take your eye out!
