I once actually saw Ginsberg in a fistfight on Broadway one day with a 3rd rate beat poet who had, the night before, set fire to part of the Beat Archives when they were housed in the City Lights basement. He had gotten drunk and was locked in after a meeting. Lit the archives for light. Ginsberg won. Big crowd of really amazed North Beachers.
He also once got me really stoned when the people from Naropa who brought him to Albuquerque picked me up hitching from UNM to downtown. I got out of the car and walked right into a wall. Good Times.
I performed at the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe when it was on 6th Street on the same night as Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. It was recorded on black and white reel to reel videotape. Unfortunately, Miguel Algarin cut up the original tapes to edit for public TV programming, instead of copying them first. That great night is gone.
βI want to see young people in America feel the spirit of the 1960s and find a way to get in the way. To find a way to get in trouble. Good trouble, necessary trouble.β John Lewis.
Peggy never understood and never will. She came into the '60's old in spirit and entered the next decade just plain old.
β'Friends, please come say hello and tell me what you think,' I called. They marched past, not making eye contact, save one, a beautiful girl of about 20. 'Iβm not trained,' she said. Which is what theyβre instructed to say to corporate-media representatives who will twist your words. 'Iβm barely trained, youβre safe,' I called, and she laughed and half-halted. But her friends gave her a look and she conformed."
So, Dame Noonington's reaction to this was to go to Columbia and try to have a lesbian hookup?
"America is a country of First Amendment rights β¦ It understands and accepts peaceful demonstrations. But it doesnβt respect breaking our laws. It doesnβt support violence as a tool or tactic and will move against it."
Nonsense, Peggy. Often it is only when the protests get violent, that things start to change. All those years of polite picketing and passing out of leaflets by the Mattachine Society, compared to two days at the Stonewall Inn, for instance...
Cleverest rip Iβve read in a long time! Great work.
There's only one captain of the quad, and that's the High Commander hisself, Dick Solomon.
Brilliant

Palestinians want peacefulness. They want to go about their lives. It's not too much to ask.
Ta, Gary.

What a crime against culture.

Occupy Wall Street!
Sophomores on Parade!
I've been waiting since Friday for this one, Gary. You didn't disappoint
Allen Ginsberg hit on me once at a book reading. I was good looking once. I don't hit for his team, which was part of the appeal as I understand it.
Me too, I think Allen hit on most young males that would show up at his readings, or events!
Me too, I think Allen probably hit on most young males that tickled his fancy!

"I'm barely trained," indeed.
I look forward to the day when these articles are compiled into a book.
Perhaps as a promotional thing for a whisky company with a sense of humor.
And delightful reading for when one is on the shitter.
A new offering from the Wonkette Bazaar maybe? A gift box with Dame Peggy's Musings and 2 airplane size bottles of Gin
Maybe I should buy that distillery and do a 'Vile communist snark' Gin. We could do a special edition that comes with the paperback.
2 miniatures is nothing like enough gin.
I like the idea of a wildly leftist snarky distillery.
"The world is a terrible place, get drunk! And also vote."
Gin.
Dame Peggington! Always good to see her upright and semi-conscious.
Will THF testify and flop his his mushroom peener on the bench to see if Stormy's description of it is correct?

I was reminded that the House passed anti-lynching laws 200 times before the Senate got around to taking it up. In 2022.
Ah, progress...
"Violence is never the answer."
So why did we fight in all those wars?
Great writing Gary,
I suspect Peggy Noonan is about as cool as Kathleen Parker. Both would rather dive into a box of wine than write anything useful.
