"Ah, Long Island in the summer! A lovely place to pass the long, hot days....Discussing the latest deranged serial killer." But by God, that's pretty damned unpleasant, so the tony set like Peggy try to ignore it.
The island has a long history of robber barons and serial killers, but as one who grew up there, its beaches are stunning - the people are another story...
''Thanks to all the pot shops that had sprung up, every block now smelled like she lived inside a giant bong'' Well that part IS true. As I had not been in the city since 2021 until this year after the rules changed, I noticed it immediately after I went out on 8th Avenue from the Port Authority.
As I am one that gets headaches from the smell (we seriously do exist) I loved it when they banned all kinds of smoking in clubs in NY state decades ago. I also noticed a block south two giant chi-chi dispenseries that I imagine few stoners could ever afford.
So it was a relief, as much as I love the city, to be back on the bus and eventually at my destination in DC, where I did not smell a thing.
First of all I was referring to pot smells which I did not smell in DC, and also the air there is much clearer than in Midtown Manhattan as DC does not have huge skyscrapers that hem the air in. And I say this loving NYC. It's the same way in other cities with skyscraper ''canyons''.
But if you are trying to make a joke about the federal government, I totally stay away from that, and at no time in my life (since I was first there in the 1980's) have I ever gone anywhere near the monuments to white slavers and the other vile federal buildlings EVER.
It is possible that there was some pollution while I was there, but I did not notice, and I DO tend to notice those things. But then I still wear masks anytime I am outside and in stores, even in my home town.
Maybe you were spared the 95°F days with bad air qulaity at 466 (the level only goes to 500).
Mind you that happened after I was in DC, but I know they had nearly as bad air quality, so dont tell me about smells,
If it weren't for Gary, no one would read Noonan at all. I was once upon a time a subscriber to the Jounal, and I cannot imagine any of its current subscribers getting to the end of the first sentence of any of her columns.
Should Wonkette ever need to trim back anything, these columns of Gary's lampooning Noonan would be an acceptable choice, IMHO. This may be an unpopular opinion...
Was at grad school out on Lawn Guy Land in the mid 80s. The Hamptons were a "tony" place, but not yet THE HAMPTONS. Farms could still be found out on the "Forks", and the wine business was just starting - you could have a nice chat with the owner about their label design. No tour buses of people just looking to get drunk without having to drive.
There are still farms out there. I took the bus to jury duty in Riverhead once it paid off for me I got sent home right away, but I passed a bunch of farms. There was a farm right next door to Splish Splash we would buy corn and other vegetables when they were selling them when we would go there. We haven’t been back since COVID though.
"According to the GOP's schedule, Oversight Chair Rep. James Comer (R-KY) will hold a hearing Wednesday on UFOs after intelligence agencies submitted a new report of incidents over the past year.
"Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) has become the Republican's leader in Congress on UFOs, but he swears there will be "professionals" before the committee to answer questions.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who sits on the Oversight Committee, appeared to reject the idea of aliens from space.
"I'm a Christian," she explained, "and I believe the Bible. I think that, to me, honestly, I've looked into it, and I think we have to question if it's more of the spiritual. Angels or fallen angels."
GOP. Always busy with the important issues confronting the nation. Next week: UFOs.
"I'm a Christian," she explained, "which is why I shoved a giant poster of a male kielbasa in front of my nation's highest legislative body and had said sausage formally entered into the record."
She's looked into it. *blinks*. Into aliens and angels. *slow blink*. I .. just ... those words came out of the mouth of someone in the house of representatives 2023 in that exact order.

Who is this silly, sodden person and why is she published anywhere at all?
Oh, the WSG.
That explains it.
I am kind of hoping that's not a typo, and maybe there's a nickname I'm not aware of...?
If folks were calling it the "Wall Street Grundle," I would be appropriating it.
I assume I could find Peggy Noonan on Substack.
I’ll search “Oracle of Gin”
An awesome sendup of Peggy's nostalgic thoughts.

I've missed (?) Ms. Noonington's thought-free amblings.
Wait. No. I just haven't had enough to drink yet.
She's a nice looking woman. Too bad she never recovered from adolescent conservatoadia.
She used to be. And even in those days, looks weren't everything. In her case, they weren't anything.
Now she is just a pathetic, raddled old nutcase who gets trotted out on the Sunday Bullshit circuit.
Sorry, but no. The evil is always visible.
I don't see myself looking for wine on Long Island, aren't the Finger Lakes what passes for NY's wine region?
There are some wineries on the North Fork, IIRC.

It's heartbreaking to see what has become of the East End and the Hamptons in the last 40 years. Too many wealthy assholes live there now.

And central park should cut back on all that greenery...
I thoroughly enjoyed this column, and look forward to Gary's next one. Thank you, Gary!
Very unpopular opinion
I like it better when Gary writes as Gary.
I am swooning. This is quite possibly Mr. Legum's finest hour.

Long Island...
When we left LI for London, several people asked why we would want to leave perfection.
Our pharmacist thought he had the topper question of them all:
"Can you get a good corned beef sandwich in London?! Huh?"
I said no, but what I should have said was, "You can't get one on Long Island either!"
And then Pegs began typing the Great Americun novel...
"All work and no gin makes Peggy angry...
Renown astrophysicist, MTG, "honestly" thinks that UFOs and aliens could be angels or fallen angels
Take that, Carl Sagan.

I don't mind hearings on UAP's, but the God Bother stuff is obnoxious...
See how many can dance on the head of a pin. If it is more than two, it's angels
Or how many can dance on MTG's pinhead
How ironic, a republican-led committee searching for intelligent life "out there" when they exhibit no intelligence in their own chambers.
Marj doesn’t have a clue what angels are supposed to actually look like

Honestly, perspective is important.
She took marriage vows.

Wow!
She's done the rEaSErcH!!
I just really CANNOT freakin' stand this...
