I love Secretary Buttigieg, and I hope that he finds an even more substantial role in a Harris administration.

The master stroke in that last clip is that he only referred to Donald Trump, not the republican party in general. It is a subtle, but I think powerful, way of reminding Republicans who aren't on the Trump train that they can feel included by not voting for him.

I'm sorry to say that we still have a copy of Vance's rancid little book in our library. Even though it goes against all of my librarian instincts, I'm almost tempted to 'mis-shelve' it to place where nobody can ever find it again.

I would expect a good library to have a copy of Vance's book as long as it's relevant, just as I'd expect it to have _Mein Kampf_. When future generations hear about either Nazis or Republicans and say, "Okay, but this was exaggerated for the movie, right? Clearly the author hated these people and was making shit up", it's useful to point to their own writings to say "No, young one, they were worse than you imagine, and bless your heart for having such a high opinion of humanity that you find a Trump presidency unthinkable."

Part of me thinks Harris should play it safe and pick a Conventional Straight White Guy for her veep, and part of me thinks the Democrats should just rip the governor off the engine and go with Secretary Pete or Gretchen Whitmer.

I have to keep repeating. Middletown Ohio is not Appalachia. It is as name implies a town between Dayton and Cincinnati.

Love how Mayor Pete slays wingnuts with wit and a smile on his face. He is damn good at it

We need more like him

"We think it’s his slow, measured, assured, grinning delivery. He’s not mad. He’s just fucking smarter than MAGA losers are, and more accomplished, and stronger, and superior in every way, and he knows it, but not in a cocky way. It’s just how it is."

I don't think Pete sees MAGA voters as losers, just regular people who are desperate for hope and got sidetracked. And that's why the FOX audience loves hearing him speak: He treats them as people, which doesn't happen a lot. Sure, he disagrees with them on quite a few matters, but he still sees them as real people who deserve to be part of the conversation.

Or were you talking about the FOX talking heads and other assorted Trump-fluffers? Yeah, those are losers.

OMG, not another fucking debate. Unless it is carried out the way the first one WAS SUPPOSED TO BE, (instant factchecking, mic cut off at end of candidate's time, talking over the other guy's responses gets your mic cut off, too, moderators must insist that the candidates ANSWER THE QUESTIONS put to them, not just spew random talking points ad libitum, without these guidelines and moderators with the guts to enforce them, it would be another waste of time. And where would we find real life moderators who will do their damned job? Certainly not within the craven ranks of the MSM, other than Rachel Maddow and maybe Nichole Wallace, and you could hear the shrieks of "BIAS! RIGGED!" on the dark side of the moon. Either Donnie Two-Scoops has the deck stacked in his favor or he won't participate. If he can't cheat he won't play.

I was thinking that in addition to cutting mics, maybe the next debate should have a rule that says: you get asked a question. You get 15 seconds to respond. If you remain on topic, you get an additional 30 seconds. If you still remain on topic, you get an additional minute.

Of course, Trump will whine that this is biased against him. Which, of course, it is, just as checking references is biased against job applicants who lie on their resume.

I just ran across "Hillbilly Elegy" on Netflix, and thought, hmm, maybe I'll give it a look. Within the first 15 minutes, the thought that this guy is now trump's running mate kept creeping into my mind. I finally realized that, no matter the quality of the movie, I was going to end up hating it just because the author of the book has become a wad of butt hair with no principles, supporting a total piece of shit. So I quit watching, with apologies to Ron Howard. Probably unfair, yes.

The movie sucked. It was unwatchable despite all the star power

Admittedly, I thought it was interesting at first. Then it turns out the main boy is 'JD', and by the time he tried to get his (future wife?) to eat something in the (Yale?) library, I could smell the cheese cooking. That's where I bailed,. And that is the extent of my knowledge of trump's new flunkie's body of work.

Ta, Evan. It's a bit late for me to watch the clips, and I know already how good Secretary Mayor Pete is at this kind of thing. Darling fiancé Meccalopolis and I chose our ketubahs (we're getting two because we live in two places). So excited! Good night, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace. Please stay safe.

I will personally help haul JD out of the lockers just for the pleasure of watching Secretary Mayor Pete stuff him in again.

Edited to add: I don’t have children but my best friend does. She’s raised them to be quirky, fascinating people. I can’t bear the thought of them struggling in a climate hellscape, or being crushed under the boot of Project 2025. I want the world to be a place worthy of their futures, not the wasteland of their nightmares.

Probably, but they'll never find us. It's the distance, you see, and the ridiculously short time span until our inevitable extinction. C'est la vie.

The bubble of radio signals is ridiculously thin, only a few lightdecades thick before technology progresses beyond using radio, That's for sending signals. Then that needs to match receiving signals, and we have no reason to expect we are unusual and we have no reason to expect we will still be around and listening in centuries, so let's put the listening period at 1000 years, which is probably a massive overestimation. So our signals need to pass the alien society's planet in that 1000 year window. That is a tiny chance in such a huge universe.

Apparently our signals have now passed 75 star systems, not all of which are capable of sustaining life.
