Also too, many of the people freaking out about "girls' sports" now couldn't have cared less about girls' or women's sports a decade or two ago. I live in the UCONN territory where the local stadiums have long been full, but I recall those road games with a paltry few dozen folks in the stands for the other side.
Now suddenly they care. Or "care." As always, it's only about themselves and their own aggrandizement.
There's a big typo in that Politico headline, "Dems scramble as GOP opposition paints Prop 1 as threat to girls’ safety and sports” should be "Dems respond with compassion and empathy as GOP assholes hate on trans kids.”
Wouldn't mind seeing the ads you mention for a change rather the ludicrous claim I constantly see the the real purpose of Prop 1 is to give illegal aliens the right to public funds. Glad to be part of the 69% (and expect that approval rate will prove to be higher).
I will be so happy when the horrible anti-trans ads stop. They air repeatedly here in FL, and they all follow the same template "[INSERT DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE] wants taxpayer-funded sex changes for public school students" and "wants men to compete in girl's sports" (that's right, they said "men", ffs). The narration is accompanied by a scary, half-tone image of [DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE] next to images of their idea of the trans menace. My heart pounds with rage every time they air... I've gotten better at smashing the mute key for all commercial breaks, but the visuals remain in the corner of my eye. I couldn't take another week of this shit! I am atheistically praying that we will flush the toilet decisively tomorrow.
Kudos to Crip for making it through a Politico article. There’s a reason Charlie Pierce calls it Tiger Beat on the Potomac, although that disparages Tiger Beat.
What I want is for Politico to do a story on how much money republicans have wasted on anti-trans ads that have proven to be largely ineffective and may have even turned some voters off the GOP.
I'm a cis woman. Trans people, especially trans women, ESPECIALLY trans GIRLS, aren't any kind of danger or threat to me.
Fuck these people trying to use me as a prop for their bigotry. They aren't dragging MY good name into their mess. They do NOT speak for me and I will not let them pretend they do.
Trans girls are girls, trans women are women. Trans rights are human rights. Fuck these mealy mouthed bigots, fuck the horse they rode in on, and fuck the cow that died to make the saddle.
Somewhat but not entirely tangentially, my wife and I went to the Chancellor's Colloquium at the UC Davis Mondavi Center last night, where Brittney Griner and Chancellor Gary May sat down for a 90-minute chat. She was amazing: honest and funny and inspiring and REAL (and omg that woman can rock a suit something fierce) as she talked about basketball, family, and her ordeal in Russia. The audience included lots of students from the Black and LGBTQIA centers, the Black Law Students' Association, and the women's basketball team. During the Q&A, she gave a great response to a student who asked about the pressures of being a queer public figure when she said, "Be yourself and don't hide who you are to make other people feel comfortable."
I thought about that, and about her book ("Coming Home," hopefully available at your local public library!). She writes about how she felt like she had to play in Russia because WNBA players make a tiny fraction of what dudes in the NBA make, and about having to squeeze her 6'9" self into a seat in coach to get to her first All-Star game because the women aren't *allowed* to have chartered flights. I also thought about the professional womens' hockey league where the players all have second jobs, like the one who's an elementary school teacher in Massachusetts.
And then I thought about the stories BG tells in her book about feeling miserable growing up because she kept growing, and her tits never came in, and her voice deepened. And how the Russian prison guards asking her cellmate if she had a dick, and how similar that was to the time she was confronted in the women's bathroom in a US airport and she dropped her pants to show her genitals like it was normal for her to have to do that. I would bet actual money that the women who freaked out about BG being in the bathroom are all up in "We just want fairness in women's sports" now.
Brittney Griner is a live example of the awesome strength of a person who emerges from the forge of hatred as a kind, amazing role model. Your comment both breaks my heart and inspires me.
I live in NY. If Dems are in disarray, I somehow missed it.
Voted "Yes" for it 15 minutes ago, as a matter of fact.

Ta, CD. Prop 1 will pass in NY. I and everyone I know has voted, or is voting, for it. Trans rights are human rights. Anything less is not enough.

I won’t be holding my breath waiting, though.

These media articles are the most colossal circle jerk outside a New York City bathhouse.
Do you have addresses for any of these bathhouses? Asking for a friend.
Not my scene but I could probably ask around.
Do they still exist? I thought they all vanished during the 1980's. I've been mislead again.

Dick Uihlein is evil.
That's it, that's the noncomment.
It's lazy writing, it's an addiction to alliteration:
"Democrats / Disarray"
"Republicans / Reprehensible"
You see it everywhere, all the time:
It's purposely prevalent in the pusillanimous press.
That's because Trump teases and terrorizes the tiny Times tyrants.
I've been in disarray all my life and still managed to succeed at anything I've put my mind to.
Suck it Politico.
And someone clarify for me...This proposition will be decided by 'one person one vote', right?
