Too many Americans are greedy, deranged, sadistic bigots. One of the many reasons I fled the country. When Gingrich and the Christo-fascist crazies took over Congress in 1994, that was the last straw for me. The US as I knew it was gone and I knew exactly where it was heading. I escaped the next year. At the time, I predicted a theocratic fascist state in 20, maybe 30 years. In 2015, we got tRump and his Nazi cult, right on schedule. If you think tRump and Republicans are bad now, wait until you see what's coming.

Can't say I'm particularly surprised. The mask has dropped. We're seeing what a certain segment of people *really* are when they get a taste of true political power and don't want to let go of it -- and it's only going to get worse as the election draws closer.

My unpopular opinion on how to control immigration is: prison time for employers who knowingly or recklessly hire undocumented workers. No penalties whatsoever for the workers/immigrants themselves.

If we mean it, mean it. Americans, all of em, reap the profit of cheap immigrant labour in cheap food and consumer goods. The employers hire undocumented labour because it's cheap, and the risks are low. They use the threat of ICE to abuse the workers. Let's switch that scenario.

It seems that Democrats are not giving immigrants a warm welcome either.

Most of these immigrants are devout Christians. They are also coming from communist countries and strongly oppose communism. They will eventually dilute the electorate in currently blue areas.

Perhaps that is why Democrats want them to stay in Texas.

You got to hand it to republicans. They know they’re constant repeating of the “invasion of the brown people through Biden’s open borders” lie scares the shit out of white people. And scared people vote Republican.

As a white, thankfully I have a college education, so I know murder is wrong.

As a white without a college education, I'm thankful to have a moral compass so I didn't need a useless degree to tell me bigotry and hate are wrong.

It really should be kindergarten level stuff, shouldn't it? It's hard to wrap my head around why so many have rejected basic kindness.

As a white, I am old enough to remember when people were taught that murder was wrong before they got to college.

This is probably the right thread in which to vent my (likely unpopular) take on illegal immigration. Years before the topic became trendy, Reading PA was ground zero for the impact on non-border towns. As undocumented immigrant population surged, out-of-state slumlords bought up the undervalued housing stock to accommodate them in tenement conditions. As a letter carrier, I saw this IRT & firsthand. The one HS in town was overwhelmed, as were the three hospitals. Gang feuds from the old country moved north and made the neighborhoods and city streets a battleground. It wasn’t so much the culture shock, but the massive drain on public resources that led to growing resentment from the white, black and brown population that had coexisted in relative peace and prosperity in this predominantly working-class enclave. This pattern was repeated in many American towns over decades of neglect by policymakers who were elected to address problems before they became insurmountable, so now we face a ‘crisis’. Like climate, pollution, poverty, health issues, the rise of authoritarianism, etc., kicking the can down the road only leads to ill-considered knee-jerk solutions.

Whether those of us on this site like it or not, immigration is a huge issue for the majority of Americans. Democrats have *got* to get a handle on it (not with razor wire) if they want to truly win over voters.

Real immigration or what Americans see and hear about immigration on cable news?

‘Real’ immigration generally involves completion of certain criteria before you can enter any country as a resident. What people see on cable news is the confusion and chaos created by selective enforcement of arbitrary and contradictory laws.

That white Xians favor impaling certain sectors of humanity, though disturbing, is not surprising. That 30% of Hispanics are onboard is both. That (R)s are behind this is baked in the cake. As I read this, I’m watching C-SPAN. In the sparsely-attended house session, they are discussing the Dept. of Interior budget. Thus far, amendments have passed to essentially gut the EPA and Natl Endowments for both Arts and Humanities. Bad things are happening, (R)s are behind them, and they’re hoping no one notices.

“Because things have gotten so far off track in this country, we need a leader who is willing to break some rules if that’s what it takes to set things right.”

Rapeublicans despise uncertainty. They want predictability. It's the core dynamic that influences their actions and beliefs. The lesser the degree of control they have, the more virulent their actions. So as the US becomes bluer and bluer, they will get crazier and crazier.

I'm so appalled I don't even know what to say. Can I hope that most decent people just weren't included in the poll, somehow, for some reason?? Because otherwise ... that is really, really bad. Like, truly awful and inhuman and so many other words I just can't come up with right now because I am so horrified by (checks math) over HALF the other white people in this country.

I just can't even.
