Myth. Nothing wrong with a small bit of soap, to break up surface grease. If your pan is properly seasoned, the seasoning is within the cast iron, maybe only a few molecules in but will NOT be affected by soap. The soap will help remove the scudge on the outside. After cleaning, give it a quick wipe with veg oil to protect from rust. Of course you will need to re-season every so often, but that’s just par for the course.

At the ripe old age of 53 I’ve been doing this since I started cooking as a tadpole, and my CI pans have served me well for years.
