Here's a deal I'd like to see: Zelenski agrees to a cease fire without guarantees in exchange for the presidency of the US. As a sweetener, Trump, Vance, Musk, the "cabinet" and the entire Republican house and Senate are gifted to Putin free of charge. Putin needs the cannon fodder and we need a decent president. Guaranteed win-win.

The Ukraine "policy" disgraces us all--it boils down to Nazi bullying of a brave nation that is trying to remain intact in the teeth of a fascist onslaught. Meanwhile, on the tariffs about to be imposed, I keep seeing articles that in no way offer a rationale for imposing them. Might that be because Donald has no idea why one imposes a tariff and because none of the normal, sane factors actually apply to Mexico and Canada? And the press covering him don't want to ask because he'll throw a conniption fit and refuse to talk to them ever again?

If he DID get the Nobel Peace Prize for anything but dropping dead...

To be fair, the pro-Putin op-ed in the Washington Post isn’t a new policy. It was from Marc Thiessen. He’s been posting deranged garbage there for years, though I have no idea why they let him. Maybe for “balance” or some such bullshit. It seems that most people are like me and ignore his idiotic opinions and just trash him in the comments.

He and Elon are very likely to come for their Medicare and Social Security soon. Because what kind of loser isn't worth ten figures and can't BUY an entire hospital to deal with their severe illness? Not that I would wish loss of such vital resources on anyone, but how the hell are they going to explain it if and when it happens? The reason I think it will happen is that the Republicans have hated these programs for decades, and the ascension of a pure sociopath to the presidency may be their last, best chance to get rid of them.

Good job of citing the facts about the whole rare earth minerals. Some of those, like cobalt, may even be worthless by the time they would get around to mining anything. Lithium is likely to be useful for battery tech for the long term, it seems, but that stuff really isn't all that rare.

trump's chumps believe that putin wouldn't put american lives at risk by attacking ukraine with mining going on?...apparently they were born yesterday and fell off the turnip truck

The more Zelenskyy acts like an unruffled statesman, the more he makes the Orange Dipshit look like an Orange Dipshit. It would be ironic (though somehow fitting) if Zelenskyy ends up unifying Europe and diminishing Trump’s Amuricca. (I say Trump’s America because the Europeans are used to our self-destructive tendencies and usually come back to us once we start to find our feet again.)

And the more the whiny little shits will complain about Zelenskyy, the deeper Trump and Republicans dig the rapidily deepening hole they’ve dug themselves into.

Don’t interrupt your opponent when they’re busy self-immolating themselves, but the Democrats should send the White House a semi-truck full of shovels. Say it’s for infrastructure week.

Prediction: sometime this year, Krasnov will announce that he has made a deal for access to Ukraine’s mineral resources.

With Putin.

"Step right up to be human shields, geologists!"

This does happen. In the 70s, I was in the U.S. Army in Europe. At the time, the Soviets had several times more soldiers in the European theater than we did; the conventional wisdom around the base was that if "the balloon went up" (as they said back then), our role would be to take the field and be wiped out defending the Fulda Gap. But then, by becoming dead Americans, our sacrifice would guarantee that the U.S. government couldn't ignore us when deciding whether to help defend against the Soviet invasion.

Can someone point out to me how Zelenskyy "insulted" Trump by pointing out the truth?

Expand full comment
simpledinosaur's avatar

Well ... Donald has a severe truth allergy, so it was very rude of President Zelenskyy to mention the truth. It's like sending a vampire a big string of garlic for his birthday.
