One correction, Robin: 'Going to the movies is (expensive), even if you bring your own snacks.' Most places you have to SNEAK them in, cuz the outfit isn't content with wringing the last dime from everybody, but make you buy totally overpriced things from them. We (as adults) used to have to sneak in our lattes or whatever rather than buy their bilgewater.

Also, I knew things were changing when I was in college, back in the age of dinosaurs (actually, late 70's). I was going to be out for the night, but left bowls of apples and homemade popcorn balls out on the porch with a bunch of jack-o-lanterns. Not one was touched, and I knew kids were in the area.

I now save full sized candy bars for the teenagers who come between 8-9 p.m. The first year (8 years ago - I waited a long time to live where we would get trick-or-treaters), we had a couple of teenagers show up and no costumes. I said "You're not wearing costumes!" and slammed the door in their faces. Then I opened the door and gave them some handfuls of candy and they made an attempt to claim they were wearing costumes. They asked what I was supposed to be and I said I was the Avenger's Initiative. I was wearing a t-shirt with the logo. Anyway, point being, don't be a meany, give the kids candy. Heck, we even offer candy to the adults with the groups of younger kids! Or turn your light out at 8 p.m. and don't answer the door.
