I currently live in Coastal Virginia (formerly Hampton Roads) and I can tell you that people from the "country" drive around with confederate flags and stickers on their cars because "heritage". This region happens to house the world's largest naval base, the east coast naval master jet base, an amphibious base, an air force base, and even a couple of army posts. There is significant racial and cultural diversity as a result of the ebb and flow of military transfers but yet these people still feel empowered to display their "heritage" regardless of how offensive it. Northram probably represents more native Virginians than most people around the country would realize who have only ever been to the DC area of it. I would personally be very pleased if this Northram (and EVMS) exposure forces some kind of change.
