I think the Senate is looking good - the numbers happen to be favorable, and the particular states with open or contested seats.
In reality, the House tends to flip to the out-of-power party in the midterms, although 2022 may be different if Biden gets his bills through and is as popular in a year as he is now. His coattails will be important, and hopefully he won't make Obama's mistake and be too busy governing to campaign. The recruitment is undoubtedly under way. And we need to target states that have a Fair Fight project going.
Also, redistricting will be a big piece of this - and the GOP did a pretty good job of fucking up the Census, though not as much as they would have liked. But reapportionment may be damaging. We'll know more about that at the end of this month, I think.
I live in a safe district that has been reelecting the same arch-liberal for 30 years so I can't say too much about this, except that House races are very local, and the DNC can only do so much at this stage - send money, offer strategists. I don't think the redistricting will even be complete until this fall.
Candidates have until the end of this year to file, and are barely beginning to raise funds for exploratory committees. House races are super-local and not too much can be done until the primaries - there's not too much point in spending money on a candidate who washes out. (Zephyr Teachout, I'm looking at you.)
You at least start planning and strategizing. Where are you going to get your volunteers? How are you going to divide up neighborhoods? What are the major issues you are going to be talking about?
