Question Cat's avatar

I'm always amazed that 3 or 5 or 10 great Dems die for every evil Republican. WTH is up with that?

Does doing evil result in better health and longevity? I'm stumped.

plushie dragon's avatar

Less stress as they go around stuffing money in their mouths like lawnmowers. Then they retire for a round of golf and a tipple. For them, life is great

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

Republican strategy all but dictates that they use Usha Vance as an attack dog against Kamala Harris. I wonder how blunt they were about what they want her to do, and I also wonder how comfortable she is with all this.

I bet this wasn't what she signed up for.

catsntrees's avatar

Ugly people marry ugly people...she knew what that thing was when she married him and she knows exactly what is expected of her and I think she will delight in it...I really want all of us to stop giving the "kids" and the spouses a free pass when they were raised in ugliness and rethuglican households they are NOT going to be the innocents you all want them to be.

Gammarae's avatar

clerked for john roberts, will probably be ok with whatever they want.

mzf's avatar

So she's a ton smarter than Vance the Lesser.

JCfromNC's avatar

Damn. That first link from Rep. Lee's Xit about the Dotard, is a, shall we say, fertile ground to find accounts to block. Damn, there are a bunch of hateful and racist comments on it from blue checks.

ziggywiggy's avatar

The movie is over if you'd like to join us there for OT.

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

Yes but have I had enough to drink for that?

M-X's avatar

Better pour another just to be sure-sure-sure.

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

Wanna make the gods laugh?!?

M-X's avatar

I've always considered it my job. Ask my Mom.

ziggywiggy's avatar

Probably! I'm starting my 4th beer so have a ways to go!

Reuters reports on an Israeli reprisal against Yemen for a drone launched by the Yemenis that hit Tel Aviv.

Dramatic footage; the Israelis are not fooling around.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15uj3eXhTYU

The Yemenis are being supplied and egged on by Iran. I personally think they are idiots for playing along, but there is often a suicidal aspect to the Arab approach.

When we lived in Oman, we were only allowed within about 30 miles of the Yemen border. The Omanis considered Yemen to be a radicalized shithole...which is objectively true. It bears a resemblance to Afghanistan.

Cooler heads are not prevailing.

paperlesstiger's avatar

Yemen has been under attack since 2015.

M-X's avatar

FOO are playing in Cincinnati next Thurs, does anyone else wanna go?

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

If you go and end up meeting Dave, tell him you have a friend whose Mom also grew up in Boardman at the same time. Betcha you’ll get a Keanu WHOA! out of him.

M-X's avatar

Ohio, right? I'm in Oberlin after many crossings of North America. Born in Elyria!

He doesn’t do the dip-lick-shake thing with his paw?

M-X's avatar

Them's jeezus people, just fyi. Like, reeeally "jeezus" and thus, prolly, you-know-who.

I'm a Sown organic oatmilk woman, but also looking at Willa's and Mooala, which does almond also and blends of stuff. Too.

eppe's avatar

Those almonds were sacred.

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

Nonetheless, that's Simba's favorite brand.

M-X's avatar

Well, that's THAT, then. He's the one payin'.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

Huh. In addition to two copies of Mein Kamph, my local library also has an e-book of Charlie Rangel’s cheekily titled memoir, “And I Haven’t Had a Bad Day Since.” Guess that’s next on the list.

Lil Snot's avatar

I can't hear that name without hearing the kid imitating him on Stephanie Miller....LOL

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

The gravelly voice doesn’t jump straight into your head?

Lil Snot's avatar

The kid sounded just like him. Hilarious.

M-X's avatar

I gotta hear this, now. Help a sister out, Snot.

phantom_stranger's avatar

I finished watching Aquaman. It was entertaining. It could probably have been trimmed by several minutes, but it was okay.

M-X's avatar

Brane soother, Shoal Bay on Anguilla.

GF hated my black satin sheets. Stuff slipped around too much for her.

M-X's avatar

Pure linen has good gripping qualities.

I mean.

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

She got me flannel sheets because it was winter at the time and she can't sleep unless her body temperature was above 120F. (I just slept under a sheet in my shorts with the window open.)

M-X's avatar

👍🏽 Open window.

Hamilton & The Crew's avatar

Satan has standards. Satan also has a sense of smell.

eppe's avatar

And Amazon Prime was offering such a great deal for it.

Littorally Speaking's avatar

Just one of the many *excellent* musical score choices in the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul series.

theCryptofishist's avatar

Those were excellent shows, although I certainly understand why some people do not find any pleasure in the sleaziness that is at the heart of the thing. But the attention to details was really admirable.

Littorally Speaking's avatar

One of the things I like best is that Vince Gilligan put actors primarily known for comedic work—Cranston, Odenkirk, McKean—in dramatic roles, and they just knocked it out of the park.

Lil Snot's avatar

I just have trouble with stories where every character is destructive and selfish and unlikeable.

LP's avatar

Same. I just can't get invested in the story.

Vienna Woods's avatar

The cinematography was incredible. I do not know why they never got a cinematography nomination, let alone an award.

Bettinala's avatar

I didn't know that. That's a travesty.

theCryptofishist's avatar

That's a nice voice too also!

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

If I find out Junior is MAGA like Jim Heath, I’m breaking something expensive.

Mavenmaven's avatar

There's always Derek Trucks

macsarunner's avatar

Just saw them. Is Trucks on our side? I wondered, there was a bit of over-the-top Americana at the end of the show which could have gone either way. Holy shit, Susan Tadeschi has some pipes, 2.5 hr show, every song an anthem, not a missed note from her I swear.

Mavenmaven's avatar

Played for Obama and came out against Trump in the past.

Lil Snot's avatar

Counterproductive masochism my friend. Break something cheap, big and loud.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

I know a few people who are cheap, big and loud that I’d enjoy breaking…

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

As long as the broken thing can be replaced, do go ahead. Not that I know anything about Junior but his playing.

Before I sign off, I'm curious which elected Democrats' political instincts y'all trust. I trust AOC's instincts ... they've been spot on. These elected Democrats have seen the abject stupidity, willful ignorance, growing fascism, and rat fucking of Congress up close and personal.

Who do you listen to?

Let me sum up's avatar

I'm so glad you asked! Stop me if I'm repeating myself (i am very.much repeating myself) 1. People of color, particularly women 2. Jewish folx, 3. The occasional cis gendered white woman (e.g. Warren) and 4. Swalwell.

Johnny Appleseed's avatar

Swalwell, AOC, Raskin, Warren.

counterlife's avatar

I've been trusting my own intincts about this and wondering about some of the establishment democrats I thought were better than what I've been seeing, while at the same time wondering why they would do this (yeah, donors, but maybe something else?) I read these two pieces tonight in the most recent New York magazine and now I am even more perplexed. I cannot link the articles because they won't let me log in even though I am a print subscriber. It's New York Magazine dated July 15-29, 2024. Articles by Olivia Nuzzi, Mark Jacobson and Rebecca Traister. Right now I know what I have always known about this incredible bullshit on the part of Democrats. Vote Blue, from the top to bottom. If it is not Biden at the top, doesn't matter, apart from being rather tragic for him and those of use who like him. shit.

LP's avatar

I wouldn't trust Olivia Nuzzi's writing at all. She is a nasty right wing gossip monger.

counterlife's avatar

Yeah, I trust her about as much as any villager/gossiping/alleged journalist. This bit seemed more honest than she often does, but who the fuck knows? I guess I am not entitled to know. The Democratic leadership have already and are going to continue to fuck this up. How do we make up for that? Am I so pissed off at them that I don't vote and help Trump and the Christian Nationalist agenda or do I realize that my only option is supporting a bunch of dumbass politicians who at least appear to do the right thing now and then? Seems we are back to least worst, which in this case is blinding obvious to most of us here. But what about those "undecided" voters who are not disgusted by Trump's ear Kotex, his malignancy, or Project 2025?

LP's avatar

She's worse than that. She was friends with Milos Yiannopolis and an apologist for the alt-right before they were outed as full-fledged nazis. She soft-pedaled them to the American Public. She's far worse than Maggie Haberman in my book.

The voting seems like a no-brainer to me. Vote for the Dems and then start pushing for the change you want. Dems have gotten a hell of a lot done in the past 4 years (much of it undoing the damage of the first Trump admin). I'm pissed off too but not enough I'm gonna risk the well-being of a big swath of our population.

counterlife's avatar

I will vote for sanity and against the madness of christian nationalism.

Littorally Speaking's avatar

The voices in my head; they’ve *never* lied to me before!

eppe's avatar

I haven't seen anything yet that would make me doubt Hakeem Jeffries' take on things.

ZorPern's avatar

Yet he recently called for Joe's ouster, before back-tracking...

Russell Jones's avatar

Years ago, a young law student showed up at our county Democratic Party assembly. He was running for a position on the University of Colorado Board of Regents and was making the rounds, getting his name out there. I got to speak with him at length, and was completely blown away, which almost never happens.

The young man had worked as an intern in the office of Andrew Romanoff, then the Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives. Romanoff introduced the candidate at the big nominating assembly a month or so after our county assembly. The line that stood out from Romanoff's speech: "One of these days, we're all going to be working for Joe Neguse."

Joe won that Regent election, lost an election for Colorado Secretary of State, did a stint as head of the CO Department of Regulatory Agencies under then-Gov. John Hickenlooper, and then got himself elected to the U.S. House of Reps. It utterly broke my heart when redistricting knocked us out of his district back in 2020.

Neguse is a top-notch member of Congress, and easily one of the top 10 most impressive human beings I've ever met. I would be quite happy if he ended up as POTUS some day.

If he has any inside info on what's happening with Biden, he's not saying. His last public statement I saw was along the lines of, "“President Biden is our nominee. I’ve heard nothing to suggest that he’s made a contrary decision.”

Johnny Appleseed's avatar

Joe Neguse is a great speaker and a very good lawyer.

theCryptofishist's avatar

I have been a total ostrich on this issue--it's too late to change horses and I don't want to have to hear these idiots, so I'm not going to say Elizabeth Warren, because she may have said something stupid I don't know about.

Old Man Yells at Cloud's avatar

Ted Cruz, everything he says is wrong so the opposite must be right.

LP's avatar

Even though she's no longer an elected politician, it's HRC. She has been on the fucking nose for years now.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

And she still has her sense of humor.

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

And, like her daughter, has a habit of speaking in complete and coherent paragraphs.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

Kid’s got some rare genes, I tell ya.

Sgt JMK's avatar

And was a hoot in Derry Girls.

paul's avatar

The seeds of doubt have already been sown. And we don't have a say.

Bettinala's avatar

I will have the privilege in the fall of teaching 18-22-year-olds how to think for themselves and discern fact from dis- and misinformation. That's my say.

Lil Snot's avatar

We have a say. We just have to say it outside of the non-comments for it to matter.

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

Don't mean we can't make noise or music or art!

2Cats2Furious's avatar

This is a great question. I haven’t heard from her on the Biden kerfluffle, but I’m going to go with my legislative girlfriend, Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

LP's avatar

Crockett made a very strong defense of Biden; your instincts are good!

eppe's avatar

Superfluous driveby comment: Ms 2Cats instincts are always right on the money.

LP's avatar

She's a badass. i loved how she took on MTG without hesitation.

2Cats2Furious's avatar

Totally. She was all, “girl, do you even know what this hearing is about?”

She’s had a number of other badass moments (she brought us the line about TFG storing national secrets “in the shitter”). And she’s only in her first term in Congress! I want to be her when I grow up. I just turned 50, so I think I still have a chance.

2Cats2Furious's avatar

You want me to smack the shit out of you? Because I totally will.

M-X's avatar

You need another spank? Cause you're pushing it.

paul's avatar

Hard to say. I used to think k better of Raskin.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

Standard technique in a purple state when a guy on your team is the incumbent.

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

I know and I still don't like it. Will tell his minions so the minute I put down this cocktail.

ETA: Pretty sure this state ain't purple. it's red with blue measles.

Lil Snot's avatar

Yeah, A lot of "dems" in tight races are panicking. (Tester, Brown). Props to Mark Kelly for integrity, at least so far.

M-X's avatar

On media blackout for my mental health. No exaggeration.

I'll be calling. And writing. And not attending the next spaghetti dinner.

2Cats2Furious's avatar

Ayup. Raskin is (was?) one of my favorites, but don’t question the sitting DEM President in such a public way.

AOC did better.

Bradthe🤖's avatar

Definitely not Pelosi anymore. She’s contributing to the problem.

Sgt JMK's avatar

A lot of that "Pelosi wants him to step down" comes from "unnamed sources" and not from Nancy herself.

Her political instincts are generally sound... I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt here.

BlueSpot's avatar

I'm not sure that Pelosi is part of the problem. She's very good at counting noses. She knows where the center of the party is, and her daughter made a strong statement in favor of Biden today.

Pelosi's political instincts are legendary.

Lil Snot's avatar

Elizabeth Warren. Rosa DeLauro.

Let me sum up's avatar

Rosa De Lauro just straightens up her wig (sometimes, and sometimes she just doesnt have time for thay shit) and marches forth...she was instrumental in getting some moms & babies plowed through the border patrol to the U.S. during a congressional visit to Matampros/Brownsville under Mango Mussolini's "remain in Mexico" program.

Lil Snot's avatar

Also the rep who ran for Congress after her son was shot -- I'm blanking on her name. I think she's from Missouri, maybe?

2Cats2Furious's avatar

(ETA: I believe you are thinking about) Lucy McBath from Georgia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_McBath

(Also ETA: Why is it that Black women are always having to do the work, whilst White men sit around dithering?!)

2Cats2Furious's avatar

Upvote for Elizabeth Warren. I don’t know the other woman.

Land Shark 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

Rosa ... good call. And she's a total badass.

Lil Snot's avatar

And what a fashion sense!

M-X's avatar

Fuck yeah, Rosa 💜

The Estivating Hibernian's avatar

Not the rich white guys who are too beholden to $$$ making them unable to do what their constituents want.

Russell Jones's avatar

The U.S. House of Representatives, Texas, the U.S., and the world as a whole are lesser places for this. All the best to her successor. Them's some mighty big shoes to fill.
