Daniel Larison included this observation on Cohen's article: "... It may be that Obama’s decision to stay out of Syria was based partly in an electoral calculation. Put another way, he chose not to ignore the public’s overwhelming opposition to greater involvement in Syria. Cohen would like Obama to say something like, “I don’t give a damn what the public wants” and plunge the U.S. deeper into the fighting in Syria one way or another. It’s not only the wrong recommendation on the merits, but it reflects remarkable disdain for public opinion. No prolonged overseas military commitment stands a chance of succeeding without substantial, sustained public support, so it’s particularly foolish to pay public opinion no mind. Interventionists are the ones that should be more attentive to what the public wants, since they are the ones trying to sell Americans on policies that will entail new and unnecessary costs and risks." emphasis mine. Is this "be bold" position based on how great the sound bites are?

The Salafis make the Taliban look reasonable -- it's hard to imagine a bunch of nuts we'd less want to give weapons to. Cohen is completely demented.

I cannot apologize on behalf of all Boomers, but I will apologize on my own behalf for never having done anything to restrict Richard Cohen. The fuckwit is a few years older than me, and so had a bit of a head start. He was born in 1941, which conveniently made him too young for Korea and too old for Vietnam, and just right to be a nattering nabob of fuck all. And a proponent of the late-50's Pax Americana worldview.

I apologize because I simply ignored him, and as a result find him permanently embedded in the fringes of American political discourse, like little embedded fetuses in the wombs of birth-control whores. I should have done something. I'm sorry.

Like those constests where you 'win' if you can eat the 14-lb cheeseburger, there's a contest where you become their spokesman, and you 'win' if you don't die within 24 months.

What possible connection could there be between an "intelligence budget" and Richard Cohen?
