Sad tears. This will continue until somebody stops it. Can you imagine going back to when only those with some money could be educated? Those without money? Maybe we could do what I heard on a history podcast recently: When New York city was overrun with "urchins" in the 1800's they put the kids on trains into the midwest to be auctioned off to farming families that needed some help with the chores.
FWIW this issue, plus the abortion referendum, is going to drive a massive GOTV in November. Once again AZ Republicans have shot themselves in the foot, because people are pissed about these two issues. That means 'hello Senator Gallego' and a pretty good chance that we flip the state houses, which the GOP currently holds with razor thin margins. And it also means we'll likely go blue again this year for Kamala- it won't be by a lot, but purple counts...
In predictable fashion, now those voucher schools are jacking their tuition, to match the voucher. Because, why not? Those families can already afford the tuition, and that voucher money is going straight into the pockets of unaccountable religious schools that deny education to all kinds of kids and families. Glad this issue is finally getting the attention it deserves.
On the plus side, after a generation of pushing kids through Christian madrassas and home-school flat earth zones, upper class Arizonans will no longer have to grapple with the servant problem.
There will be plenty of unemployables to mow their lawns.
I've said this forever. This is a subsidy for people with means who can already afford to send their kids to a good private school. That's why Republicans want vouchers. They don't think anyone should have handouts but themselves. They love free stuff. It's middle class white people who are home schooling, because they can afford for one parent to stay home. Any "private school" that a seven or eight thousand dollar voucher can buy isn't worth attending, and I'm sure that "academies" are springing up everywhere. We're already getting them in Texas in anticipation of the voucher program, here.
This - no one that isn’t already well off is going to use vouchers to send their kids to a charter (unless it’s one of those “rent some unused office space and start a charter that probably won’t be around in three years” charters)
When, back in the day, desegregation of public schools became The Law, tut-tut, all of a sudden we saw the rise of "separate and unequal" charter schools that clamped onto the public teat (I thought conservatives also HATED everything taxxy, not just the blahs and other non-melanin challenged folk they steal "their hard-earned" money from on a daily basis? No? Maybe in a bass backwards way there is hope for them yet! Haaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahaha) and have NEVER let go until they are literally sucking it dry while giving the finger to actual real live children (and I think you know how much conservatives LURVE them some children-- well, as long as they hang out just fetusing around in their tradwife womb home and never birth themselves thus risking conservative ire for competing at the limited gummint teats.
Admitting I have an aggressively proletariat attitude towards education: pay your taxes to fund public schools, even if you don’t have kids, so future generations are educated. And if the public school isn’t good enough for your kids, pay for the alternative yourself (especially religiously-affiliated schools).
For most of these yahoos, public school education is too good: they teach science, history, and how to behave decently to other people. That stuff is anathema to right wingers.
A conumdrum. Do you "means test" social programs or not? South of Arizona, parents just receive a set stipend check (I think it's about 1000 pesos per kid in school). Of course, that's peanuts for some of the snootier prep schools tuition and fees, but then again, if the purpose is to foster education (and child-rearing), it helps.
Of course, the snooty prep schools all raise their prices to keep out the unwashed masses. But then, again, families who really, really, really want their to send their kid to go to a private school for "reasons" (some even legitimate) aren't cutting back as much on essentials to afford the extra expenses.
The following letter was sent to Vice President Kamala Harris by advocates for public schools from across the nation. They pointed out that public schools, attended by 50 million students, are being harmed by privatization programs, which force public schools to cut budgets, lay off teachers, and eliminate courses and activities. Voucher schools are allowed to discriminate against. Students they don’t want: students with disabilities, students with low test scores, LGBT, and students of a different religion. For the past decade, research concurs that vouchers actually harm poor kids, who lose academic ground. Most vouchers are amused by students who already attend private and religious schools.
They urged VP Harris to reject Pennnsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro because of his support for vouchers. They urged her to support someone with a strong record of opposing privatization, like Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky or Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.
I don't know—those ninja trampoline skills might come in handy any minute now...
obvious outcome of obvious scam from obvious fascists
So why don't poor people now go to private schools? Is there some kind of other barrier that only hits poor people? Probably.

Arizona also does not require motorcyclists to wear a helmet
FREEDUMB !
How very Darwinian.
I have an idea. Let's implement a fair system of taxation, and use some of the proceeds to send all our kids to good schools.
Oh, no, wait. As Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) said, "Education creates liberals."
Goddamn I am glad I am retiring in a year and a half.
I need to get on this, because retirement looks complicated.

Same for Wisconsin. So many of them opened up and they were fly by night outfits that took the money and ran

I just don't think the problem with school vouchers is means testing. Is it a social program, really, when the purpose is to destroy public education?

That would be great, as Obama really drank the “Waiting for Superman” Kool-aid when he hired Arne Duncan as SecEd
I liked Shapiro for VP until I heard about his support for vouchers. He dropped to being my last choice.
I’m a two issue candidate: pro-choice and pro-public schools.
Even in foreign policy, I am only for supporting countries that recognize women’s rights and good public schools.
School vouchers and charter schools are the segregation academies of the 2020’s.
Yeah, I've noticed there's never vouchers for sending your child to a different public school.
And moving your kid from one school district to another is almost impossible.
Yes. So much for “school choice.”
