FEC regs also too prohibit "false statements", especially those relating to endorsements (and isn't cutting a campaign ad an endorsement?) although the FEC several years ago just threw its hands up and quit the enforcement business entirely, pretty much, which is maybe why John Conyers introduced a bill to create a private cause of action to secure preventive relief from such false statements?
