Those are very good suggestions, but bushes and hedges were tried before, and nobody would maintain them, so they became overgrown and ugly. They also create a problem for the mowers.

A raised bed is the simplest idea I could come up with because I would plant bulbs - daffodils and tulips - which only require someone to remove the dead leaves at the end of their growing season, and dwarf zinnias from seed, which produce vivid colors and die back each year. (I would prefer petunias, but the deer eat them all.) If I should drop dead, the daffodils and tulips would continue flowering without maintenance.

If I used timber for the edging, then yes, in 10 years or so someone will have to repair or replace it. That is why I would prefer to use concrete, but the problem there is expense, delivery charges, and also construction is more complex.

I have been looking for an affordable alternative to either landscape timbers or paving stones, but I haven't found a good one. There are metal corner and inline brackets which hold 2x timbers to create a raised bed, but the brackets themselves are quite expensive, and we would need at least 20 of them to form such a wide bed.https://www.gardeners.com/b...https://www.gardeners.com/b...
