Actually it was Boris Yeltsin who "converted the Soviet Union to a free market democracy," and enable the "market system...to bring its positive lessons" to the socialist bloc.

One of the biggest players in that was Leningrad Mayor Anatoly Sobchak. His point-man in divvying up the spoils, directed by the Chicago School of Economics, the Harvard Kennedy School, Kissinger and Associates, and Larry Summers; was Sobchak's ambitious young assistant.

Middle class grew considerably in recent years, anyway in certain regions. Floating on a pool of oil and gas. The relative height of the fall into impoverishment is what makes for a middle class revolt. Even the security services staff will feel that vertigo, certainly their upper echelons. One can hope.
