The problem is, trump and the republicans lie and promise - and then go ahead and keep doing what they're doing anyway. When you have criminals who keep stealing, all the while telling you they will never ever steal again, even as their hands are grabbing your wallet, you have to put them in prison to stop them. They can't/won't stop themselves unless they're physically detained. Spoken and written agreements to stop stealing have no effect at all to people who don't care and can't be shamed.

Please do not vote for a new continuing resolution until Trump and Musk agree to stop and undo their illegal and unconstitutional actions. So far as I can tell, refusing to cooperate with Republicans on this issue is the last piece of leverage Democrats have to stop the craziness. Please use it.

I just finished writing my senators and congesscritter demanding they draw a line and don’t cooperate on a CR until Musk and DOGE are out, congressionally mandated agencies and funding is restored and illegal firings are reversed. My closing statement: “This is a coup. Start acting like it.”
Do I think Democrats will cave? Sadly, yes. If they don’t cave, and the shutdown happens, do I think Trump will illegally ignore the debt ceiling and keep right on spending (enabled by his lackeys in Treasury and Congress)? Also yes.
Trump will declare a "national emergency" and do anything he wants until someone stops him. About the only "someone" out there is the USSC and even then, he's likely to ignore them.
Don't forget Rand Paul, who many years ago asked exactly why anyone had to listen to what nine people in robes say.
