In turn of the century (19th to 20th) New York City the Civil War hero Col. William d'Alton Mann published "Town Topics.” It was a blackmail scheme - society folk who didn't pay off saw their private letters (often purloined by underpaid domestic help) in public print.

Col. Mann added a curious twist. If he was paid off he would print a wildly effusive piece praising the victim. Telling the world who had just forked over the upfront whipout.
