What is up, Los Angeles? Has it been too long since a child was murdered by his parents after you'd had six complaints about them? Well set that "days without a murdered child completely ignored by DCFS" back to zero.
How bad did this eight-year-old boy get murdered last week? Really fucking bad.
When paramedics arrived at his Palmdale home last week, 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez's skull was cracked, three ribs were broken and his skin was bruised and burned. He had BB pellets embedded in his lung and groin. Two teeth were knocked out of his mouth.
His mother's boyfriend allegedly told authorities that he beat Gabriel repeatedly for lying and "being dirty," according to confidential county documents reviewed by The Times.
Los Angeles County's Department of Children and Family Services left Gabriel in the home despite six investigations into abuse allegations involving the mother over the last decade.
He died Friday of his injuries. His mother and her boyfriend were charged with murder and torture. They have not entered pleas, but records show Gabriel's mother told paramedics that the boy's injuries were a result of self-mutilation.
By all means, do click over to the Times to read the excruciating history of abuse documented by teachers, therapists, and other professionals who are not social workers employed by DCFS, which -- rather mystifyingly -- called the complaints unfounded.
Let us not forget to get all uncivil and partisan by reminding our readers that conservative morals person Dennis Prager thinks this is the system children should be abandoned to if their parents accept help with free breakfasts at school, because it proves that they are dumb and lazy and there is no hunger in America and it teaches children to be takers, and another load of arglebargle nonsense too.
We will also say we have had personal experience with this system, which is how our own sweet son came to live with us 18 years ago, and most of the social workers on his case were excellent, and only one put our baby in Baby Jail after we threatened to call his supervisor on him when he wouldn't return our calls. (God's honest truth.) (Boy was there for a week.) (They had to keep him in a crib in the infirmary, or he would have been abused by the children who were not two years old.) (Also fuck you Dennis Prager, in hell.)
We are getting closer and closer to leaving behind our dumb hippie "waaah capital punishment" stance and going full on CHINESE-STYLEY EXECUTIONS FOR ALL GOVERNMENT FUCKWITS WHAT CAN'T DO THEIR JOBS.
But that is probably just our emotional girl hormones that make us so irrationally upset when babies are murdered after six "unfounded" complaints.

OK, Editrix, ya got me dead to rights. Career (25 years) social worker here. None of it spent in CFS though. (Thank 'God'!) Also not the psychotherapist flavor of social worker that is so popular in my profession these days, but the old-fashioned, old-school help-to-empower-people-from-populations-that-were-historical-targets-of-discrimination flavor of social worker. (Yup, one of _those_ people.)
As for the world-class criminal negligence described in the article, all I can say is "SSSSSSHHHHHEEEEEEEETTTTTTTT!!!!!!!" And a profoundly sad two-handed facepalm. To be fair, I'm sure none of the DCFS case workers ever saw any evidence of abuse. Because they did not look.
