I don't think anyone would be sorry if those millions were going to buy something worthwhile--say, the personal papers of a halfway decent writer of some kind, or an archive of documents that someone might someday find useful for research. But Wolfe is a hack, and his moment came and went with a couple of thin works of weak snark in the 1960s.

To be sure, Mr. Wolfe could have donated his papers to the NYPL. He's not exactly struggling financially. But that would have called for him to be civic-minded.

Sounds like a real Bonfire of the Banality.

(Or maybe the clothes his tailor made just weren't made of The Right Stuff.)
