Polk's administration engineered the Mexican-American War and promoted the Manifest Destiny. Reagan's administration engineered the Iran-Contra Affair and promoted the Damndest Mendacity.

Get out of town! Man, D.C. is the smallest city in the universe, and the Pentagon is even smaller still.

My first encounter with it was in the National Guard, someone was reading it at drill and I was paging through it, thinking what .. the fuck ... is this dude crazy? The guy said something like "know your enemy, you know" and I was like, if this shit is true, I am 100% down with this guy!

Carter really tried to do everything himself but there wasn't enough time in the day. SNL did a great skit of him (played by Dan Aykroyd I think) talking down someone having a bad acid trip.

"This gave Communists around the world the idea that the United States had given up on its policy to protect Central America from Communism, which led to increased terrorism in El Salvador and Nicaragua."

Oh FFS. I remember the 80's and the almost complete control the "liberal media" and the hawks in DC had over the truth about what we were doing in Latin America. Almost no one was aware of any of it, and most people thought the Sandanistas were totalitarian dictators and torturing everyone constantly. Chomsky's Deterring Democracy was a very rude awakening for me.
