My first encounter with it was in the National Guard, someone was reading it at drill and I was paging through it, thinking what .. the fuck ... is this dude crazy? The guy said something like "know your enemy, you know" and I was like, if this shit is true, I am 100% down with this guy!

Carter really tried to do everything himself but there wasn't enough time in the day. SNL did a great skit of him (played by Dan Aykroyd I think) talking down someone having a bad acid trip.

Oh FFS. I remember the 80's and the almost complete control the "liberal media" and the hawks in DC had over the truth about what we were doing in Latin America. Almost no one was aware of any of it, and most people thought the Sandanistas were totalitarian dictators and torturing everyone constantly. Chomsky's <i>Deterring Democracy</i> was a very rude awakening for me.
