What's the recall procedure in Dallas?

Expand full comment

Recalls only happen when Republicans are about to lose majority in a place. Then they suddenly want one, for the good of the people, and not at all because they plan to abuse it by constantly recalling Democrats for the crime of being elected.

So Dallas ought to have one.

I guess it's his retirement plan.

This should count as fraud and lead to instant dismissal. Sinema, Mainor, Cotham, and Dan Ryan (Portland, OR) all misrepresented themselves and their policies.

Ta, Stephen. I'm disgusted. I'll bet my old friends in Dallas are, too.

Gotdamnit.

He has higher ambitions in Texas and doesn’t want to wait for the embluening that’s happening. Count on it.

Wonder if they have recall elections in Dallas county...

At least half of the population in Texas lives in a community with local recall; other municipalities without recall have no alternate mechanism for independently removing local officials in the rest of the state.

(But Dallas can.)

How To Recall a Dallas Mayor

After he switched parties from Democrat to Republican, some are interested in kicking Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson out of his seat in City Hall.

By Jacob Vaughn

September 26, 2023

In his op-ed, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said Democrats spend too much time virtue signaling and thumbing their noses at Republicans.

Last week, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced that he was a Republican. The news of his switch has some people wondering what it would take to recall the mayor. Someone has already put together a website toward the effort: recallmayorericjohnson.com.

We reached out to the Instagram page sharing the site, but didn’t get a response. The site also does not list who is responsible for starting the petition. However, text on the site reads: “Join the recall of the Mayor of Dallas, where we’re dedicated to restoring trust in local government by holding our mayor accountable for his party switch. We believe in transparency, accountability, and consistent representation, and we’re actively seeking volunteers to join our cause. Together, we can demand the accountability the city deserves.”

These sudden party switches aren’t happening in a bubble. You’d think, if anything, with the amount of Republicans who either quit or got voted out would be switching to D. The Republican Party as of late has been absolute garbage with Trump as it’s stinking head (his name had to be taken off hotels because of his tarnished brand). Like hats off on advance to the intrepid journalist who uncovers whatever scandal this ends up being.

Apparently, you can buy anybody in Texas.

Not a surprise, at all.

If Johnson is so sure that the people will support him in his decision, he should step down and run as a Republican in the special election.

So basically he wants to go all in on the graft and corruption but figures the Dems won't stand for it, but since it's the mantra of the GOP it'll be a better fit. Look for him to be under indictment for something in another 5 years.

Texas isn’t getting “more Red”. Our politicians are getting more corrupt. Dallas didn’t elect a Republican. That’s the real “voter fraud”.

I hate to be one of those conspiracy guys, but there is something a bit fucky about this happening again and again--longtime Democrat wins election in very Democratic constituency, then switches, arguing their party somehow got all woke in the short period since their election. It obviously tanks their career, fucks over their political relationships, and for what?

I hate to assume there were bribes involved, but it'd be worth some journalists doing some digging. It's very strange also that this is only happening in one direction.

None of em are really "long time democrats"

Most of em claim to be centrist though. Except KS, she pretended to be a proggie to get elected

There was that one in NC though who had a liberal record--I mean none of these are people who had been Republicans until recently. There's just no obvious indication that they'd turn coat.

A billion dollar fortune is an existential threat to democracy. Also: $30 billion is the CPI adjusted cost of the Manhattan Project. There are probably 50 people with that level of wealth. 2% of the population are psychopaths. Probably higher with the extremely wealthy

"Why" is one of the important questions of journalism.

Though, my hunch, is these guys are opportunistic and Republicans whine and dine them and offer them the world. Cornyn's next term ends in 2026, and if he retires, this guy would have a shot -- certainly more of one than if he remained a Democrat.

That could be, though if he's not full MAGA he may be DOA in the primary.

Translation: I ran for mayor to get PAID, and in Texas if you want to get paid well as a politician, you become a Republican.

Ok, We need a law preventing these kind of flips after getting elected. Obviously we can't force Johnson to govern as a democrat but we can prevent him from officially switching parties and getting an advantage from calling himself a republican. Also, I am so sick of republicans who just lie, lie, lie.
