nothing good can come of acting. nothing good can come of not acting.
we have no acceptable partners on the ground. anti-regime exiles are disaffected, out of touch and divided. we have only the french (!??!!) and british as allies willing to do something with us. we would certainly not get a UN mandate. the most aggressive action we could consider taking (we are not going to invade) is a no fly zone which involves all sorts of aggressive actions (including likely firefights with a sophisticated syrian air force in a populous country - this is NOT libya) and many casualties (civilian and on our side). oh and the possibility of that republican wet dream: a tangle with fucking russia.
or we make do with our 'humanitarian aid' and watch assad murder his own people while al qaeda affiliates salivate at the prospect of picking up the pieces when the dust settles and 100K more are dead.
when i think of that devil's choice, not sure why bamz wanted to be re-elected.
