If you need to or want to talk about the person who engaged in the very visible self harm in NYC earlier today,
ONE: do not post a link to stories about it without saying that that's where the link is going. People should be able to make an informed choice about clicking on that kind of news.
TWO: Let's not joke about it. There are many reasons why people wouldn't want to read a joke about suicide or self harm here on Wonkette.
Other than that, I think we're good. Musk is a great target for punching up, so I'm sure you'll find an outlet for your sense of humour.
I'm surprised to see that virtually all the media coverage of this is being...respectful and cautious. I know the folly of thinking "is this a turning point...?" but maybe...?
I just turned on MSNBC to watch Nicolle and that piece of news was reported at the beginning of the show. WE NEED TO SPEND MONEY ON BETTER MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS IN THIS COUNTRY. This is just incredibly sad.
To his credit Reagan EMTALA was implemented during the Reagan administration
Although only 4 pages in length and barely noticed at the time, EMTALA created a storm of controversy and it is now considered one of the most comprehensive laws guaranteeing nondiscriminatory access to emergency medical care and thus to the health care system. Even Reagan wasn't all bad. Trump is a different story
That was... A lot. Several paragraphs where I'm right with the guy, then off on a detailed plot summary of a classic Simpsons episode tangent... Dude needs help in many ways.
I'm glad we're being understanding about first reactions to this story. Our first line of defense here is humor, and I understand if folks got ahead of their skis there.
What a sad, sad story. Perhaps this person could have been helped if we had a better safety net in this country.
The only time I saw self-immolation as an effective protest was during the Vietnam War, when a Buddhist monk, Thích Quảng Đức, in protest, did the deed. It was an extreme self-sacrificial act against South Vietnam's persecution of Buddhists, but as I recall, in America we saw it as a vivid anti-war protest. Said John F. Kennedy of one photograph, "No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one."
Already pretty sure the man was broken for that Trump rabbit hole to be appealing in the first place, but it's just sad and awful that he crawled so far down into it that all the light was gone.
The person may very well not have been a Trumpist and instead chose that location b/c he knew that there would be cameras rolling.
Initial reporting that he was a Trumpist were based on the fact that he undertook his action in an area set aside for Trump supporters to be able to protest without interfering with traffic in and out of the courthouse.
Actually, Trump protesters, supporters, and members of the public have gathered in Collect Pond Park. There were plenty of police around to keep an eye on the crowds. The man is from Florida, a state that suffers from a lack of services for poor and working class people.
I feel horribly for that poor man. Whatever his intentions or plan, he must have already been in pain to make a choice like that. I hope he’s not consciously suffering terribly. What a tragic decision. Even the bystanders should have support available for having seen that.
I’m considering an EV for the first time. The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach E GT. It’s more a little crossover thingy than traditional mustang GT. But it can move. 0-60 in about 5 seconds, speedy for an EV. And the range is over 200 miles, which works for me. I’m a homebody typically, except to visit mom, 120 miles away. I wouldn’t touch a Tesla with a 10-foot inflatable Trump doll.
It’s starting to sound like our favorite 80’s movie “Gremlins”. The list of normal things you are NOT allowed to do to Cybertruk, lest it immediately stop functioning, just keeps growing. Kids, never buy a car whose sales agreement probably says *everything* is “operator error” unless Elno says otherwise.
Ta, Dok. About two decades ago, I went with the ex and his adult kids to a family wedding in the Bay area. We spent a couple days there, and while driving somewhere turned a corner and saw an early Tesla showroom/dealer. I got behind the wheel of an orange roadster and had my picture taken. I've loathed infernal combustion engines for a very long time, and it was a lovely photo.
It is, of course, not the lubrication used to slide the shoe on the accelerator pedal, but shitty design. The cover, as is true in the vast majority of vehicles, should be nigh on impossible to remove on purpose, nevermind just slipping off willy-nilly.
The cyber truck looks like something out of an old MS-DOS pc game, which ought to be kinda cool but is just fugly. With that level of design decisions I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.
My dad is a really smart guy but he unfortunately got suckered into buying a scam product because he thought Tesla had something to do with it - a "power conditioner" that would bring down your bills by absorbing power spikes, as he described it. Really shows the spread of the bullshit myth of Elon Musk, boy genius.
curious how everyone was fine with 'gas pedal' for numerous vehicles not using gasoline for decades and decades and decades but Tesla dorkasses can't help being pedantic about it.
Just going to repeat my caution from last thread:

It’s sad. More evidence that trumpism is a mental illness. So unfortunate the poor man couldn’t get the help he needed
Totally Agree CD! We and this person need peace. I'd advise sending loving thoughts...can't hurt.
I'm surprised to see that virtually all the media coverage of this is being...respectful and cautious. I know the folly of thinking "is this a turning point...?" but maybe...?
Thank you for watching out for us!
I genuinely have no idea what you are talking about. But suicide isn't funny ever. It is just achingly sad.
I just turned on MSNBC to watch Nicolle and that piece of news was reported at the beginning of the show. WE NEED TO SPEND MONEY ON BETTER MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS IN THIS COUNTRY. This is just incredibly sad.
Thanks, Reagan.

One of his many gifts that just keep on giving.
Straight line from Reagan to Trump.
His Substack manifesto so supports your observations about mental health care needs. https://theponzipapers.substack.com/p/i-have-set-myself-on-fire-outside
Ted K all over again, except for the fire.
It was sane and compelling until it wasn't....
Nope.
I started then I had to stop.
Nope.
It's OK. I also could not take more than one minute of the murder video where Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd.
Yeah. I'm woke! And I'm Proud of it!
Same, Doctor Debby. Same. 😟
That was... A lot. Several paragraphs where I'm right with the guy, then off on a detailed plot summary of a classic Simpsons episode tangent... Dude needs help in many ways.
Yah. I got to the Lisa Simpson is Hillary and vice verse part and said to myself, "oh dear"........
I haven't seen that news. Knowing the American innerwebs as I do, I suppose it will find me.
I'm glad we're being understanding about first reactions to this story. Our first line of defense here is humor, and I understand if folks got ahead of their skis there.

I was basically the “Agony of Defeat” guy.
>> "Our first line of defense here is humor, and I understand if folks got ahead of their skis there." <<
Yup. Humor is definitely used for coping and defense. On some topics, though, those jokes are better made in private with your best friend.
My sense of humor was once the reason I escaped a full nervous breakdown, but that didn't require posting in public.
Very true. It's just so reflexive to post your latest humorous observation sometimes. A reminder that caution is necessary is always welcome.
It's hard to un-say things, right?
The only time I saw self-immolation as an effective protest was during the Vietnam War, when a Buddhist monk, Thích Quảng Đức, in protest, did the deed. I think he may missed the photo of Kim Phuc. He might have revised his estimate.
If he had still been alive
Therein lies an irony. If he had still been alive, there might not have been a photo.
Already pretty sure the man was broken for that Trump rabbit hole to be appealing in the first place, but it's just sad and awful that he crawled so far down into it that all the light was gone.
It's a cult.
Dude was definitely not a Trumper. About as far from it, and politics, as you can get.
The person may very well not have been a Trumpist and instead chose that location b/c he knew that there would be cameras rolling.

Yep. He new all the media would be there...
Actually, Trump protesters, supporters, and members of the public have gathered in Collect Pond Park. There were plenty of police around to keep an eye on the crowds. The man is from Florida, a state that suffers from a lack of services for poor and working class people.
Trump was no more than a supporting character in the man’s mental drama.
Yeah, his propaganda is not explicitly Tumpist
He told a reporter that he chose that location because he would get attention.
Love ya Crip
Good news. UAW wins at Volkswagen

You'll love an EV I bet. I got one in November and it makes other cars seem primitive and noisy.
I feel like "don't taunt Cybertruck" is somewhere in that manual.

The defect is the clown who is at the top of the corporate organization chart.

Right. It's not a gas pedal, it's a foot feed!
My ma called it a foot feet!
I ran a lot of heavy equipment that had both hand and foot throttles. That's how we differentiated.
She grew up on a farm, so probably same reason.
Here it is used in a song:

There is a cybertruck in my neighborhood and I saw it today on my way to the grocery store.
It is just as ugly in person. Like a giant brick or a 5 year olds car drawing. And it sounds like it's just as valuable as a brick, too.

there was also the Glenn Howerton story about his Tesla problems. sounds absolutely infuriating.

I dunno, I call the go pedal in my diesel wagon the accelerator pedal. Pedantic? Maybe.
whatever the opposite of "go woke go broke" applies to Elno.
Go Nazi, go fuck yourself.
Go fash, lose cash
Great work. Give the CEO of that company a multibillion dollar bonus.
