"Well look, it might mean some legal residents or citizens who venture out without their papers might be inconvenienced — and maybe held in jail long enough to lose a job — but nobody ever said due process had to be fast, did they?"
No one could possibly foresee how this law could go wrong.
Which is why Cheech Marin didn't make a movie in *1987* called "Born in East L.A.".
I know, there are plenty of good people down there and it would be irresponsible to condemn them to unmitigated Texas. It's a funny thought experiment, though
I have a good friend who is something of a Luddite - doesn't drive, doesn't have credit cards, lives in a decrepit house he inherited from his parents (actually, didn't "inherit" yet because his sister, the executor of the estate, hasn't completed probate yet) didn't own a cell phone until 3 years ago when his landline finally died (again, decrepit house). He does not have a current ID - he's never had a DL, and his state ID expired years ago. I keep telling him to go get a state ID, but he pooh-poohs the idea.
He also dresses like a bum, and he once had a police officer question him because someone had reported a "suspicious character" on the streetcar.
His family emigrated here in the 1820s from the Caribbean. But - here's the kicker - his surname is Hispanic. Whenever I hear about shit like this law, I think about him and what could happen to him.
Good thing we can trust Texas cops to always be reasonable and not just throw legal residents over the border because they feel like it or because someone "mouthed off" to them
I hear/read that Latinos are leaning more Republican because 'strong leadership'/machismo, and I can't understand really why they'd deliberately vote against their own interests like that.
Because for some (not just Latinos, but just about every ethnic group - including wypipo - in America), toxic masculinity is more important than their own security.
I’m not a particularly nice or generous person, but I will never understand the reflexive, racist mean-spiritedness behind immigrant bashing. What quantifiable negative effect has immigration caused the average American?
Ever since the days when Ben Franklin badmouthed Germans in Pennsylvania because they didn't speak English, immigrants are blamed for everything Americans irrationally fear.
Any fiction writers smarter than me (all of them) have any use for an idea regarding a sprawling, modern-day "Zimmerman Telegram" intrigue with archetypes of Putin and cartel-heads scheming an explosive Mexican coup and the re-annexation of Texas to keep the US from funding the Israeli OR Ukrainian wars? The thing writes itself!
Mad props for E Plebnista
Why does the rest of the world hate Americans, again? /s

Texas wants to be its own country so damn bad, we ought to let them and impose the same policies on Texans trying to enter the U.S.
So tempting, isn't it? Too bad there are so many good people in Texas who'd get hurt if this happened.

So, Cheech Marin’s song Born in East L.A. is becoming reality

Damn, didn't scroll down far enough again.

oh they've deported loads and loads of American citizens over the years.
I wish you weren't right, but you are. It makes me ashamed.
Texas does feel like you're on a different planet sometimes, tho.

"Deliberately vote against their own interests" is a core character trait of the average Republican voter.

Before that probably
Well certainly a number of the Iroquois Confederacy felt the same way about the illegal immigrants of the time.
These people are absolute monsters.

My grand-father came here from Norway.
Should I be worried? I mean, I have a drivers license. Will that save me?
Do the cops at least get to literally boot them in the ass as they send them across the border or is that a “prohibited act” too?
Don't worry though, they'll only do it to brown-ish people.
How many legal residents and US citizens will get “accidentally” deported by cops using this law?
If they are brown-ish, Hot Wheels won't care.
That already happens... So more.
Only the ones who mouth off!
