"Texas is not in imminent danger."

It is, from Greg Abbot and maybe it's already too late.

Ta, Dok. Abbottoir is a disaster on every level. Who the fuck is going to pick the produce, raise the babies, and mow the lawns, let alone slice the meat in the slaughterhouses?

At the time the constitution was written the United States had virtually no standing army because there was little funding for it. So states did have to rely on state militias to keep some semblance of order as the white settlers were encroaching on land that belonged to native tribes. Waiting for a detachment of soldiers in Delaware to march mainly on foot to Southwest Virginia would take a month or more. Which was also one reason for citizens to own weapons of the day so they could join a well regulated militia instead of a rag tag band of idiots with guns.

But of course Republicans cannot get over the idea that things have changed in the past 237 years, including more murderous weapons, no slavery, women no longer being property, a huge standing army, and well regulated military reserves and guard troops. They also try to convince people that because some Southern Democrats originated the KKK and tried to block civil rights legislation into the 1960s that Democrats are the racists and Republicans are champions of equal rights. They don't want to just return to the 1950s, they want to return to the 1750s, when they had a king to tell them what to do.

Also at the time the constitution was written, Texas was part of México, and since some of SCROTUS believe thay can go back to English law to screw this country, can't we just take Abbatoir and toss him in a cell in Ciudad México and have the Mexican Supeme Court solve the case?

Gregg would much rather the world come after him for shitting on some random brown person than Kate Cox.

What will they do when they have no one to work the fields, the restaurants and construction? Look at FL. Be careful what you wish for.

Georgia passed an anti-immigrant bill that sent every brown person racing for the state border, legal or not. This was at the height of the Great Recession, with official unemployment around 9-10%. Big ag businesses chartered buses and sent them into the cities to hire unemployed white and black workers to harvest their crops. They paid them the same way they paid the Latino workers.

Most worked one day only and never came back to get their pay for that single day of work. Their crops rotted in the fields and on the branches.

After my little town was pounded by hail as big as softballs earlier this year quite a few people needed some roof work done and at times there were a half a dozen or more jobs going on in the immediate vicinity of my house at the same time; pretty much every person on those roofs was a Latino.

Then, on my commute to work every day they're doing road construction on a state highway and I see lots of white guys there ... only they're mostly driving the construction company trucks around. When it comes to the people out doing the work pretty much every one of them doing the manual labor jobs are Latino.

The farm laborers in this area, which is very heavy in vegetable production, are ... guess what?

Thinking about it, I probably see more Latino people on some days just driving to work as I see whites and blacks and Indians and Asians combined.

Please nobody act like any of these fascists are not telling us the plan.

Please nobody act like this is a joke (even Joyce White Vance wrote a column this week exhorting that we take these cheaters who will do literally anything to seize power, seriously when they communicate their plans).

Was the Muslim ban a joke ...?

Jeebus, this dude's so evil he's making me miss Governor Hair, and I despise perry. The corruption in the tx gop is such an integral, inextricable part of it's "work" that i end up yearning for the old-school corruption of a Huey Long as an alternative...at least Long understood that in exchange for tolerating his corruption, voters expected some tangible benefit that actually affected their lives.

It didn't used to be like that, though.

Were Ann Richards and Molly Ivins so long ago that nobody remembers?

Ann Richards as Governor Richards in Texas.

How did the state go from Governor Richards to "Governor" Abbott?

For ages I have said that Ann Richards should've been President and Molly Ivins

Vice-President. Only problem is that the constitution says that the Pres and the VP have to be from different states, so one of them would've had to move to somewhere like

Lake Charles, LA or Las Cruces, NM.

Sadly, it can never be...

I haven't delved into the article yet, but noticed in the Mexican daily La Jornada a report that Union-Pacific railroad is already complaining about its freight trains being delayed "thanks" to Abbott... when all that daily cross border traffic starts piling up, the economic costs (never mind the human ones) is gonna really start to hurt. As it is, Mexico, a major supplier not just of agricultural products (and workers), auto parts, electronics, medical supplies, electricity, oil, etc. to Texas, has all kinds of ways it can respond... and has been looking to expand its export market as well as strengthen the domestic market anyway.

Start routing commercial traffic through the other 3 state sharing a border with Mexico.

Do not accept commercial traffic into Mexico originating in Texas.

Play hardball with this asshole. Yes, it will cost Mexico but I think Mexico's federal government could subsidize the changes. It will cost Texas more....

Texas jails are already overcrowded, understaffed and dangerous. When will Texas start building special concentration camps for undocumented immigrants? No, wait, they already did that, and filled them with children in cages.

It would have been interesting to get a response on the possibility of the Mexican Federales pointing loaded guns at Texan law enforcement officers.

Of course, it would just be met with more bullshit macho chest thumping by an asshole with a desperate need to convince everyone that he's a big, tough guy.
