Ta, Dok. That cat in a hat is one of the greatest illustrations I've ever seen.

Where's the cat? Where's the cradle?

ST:TOS s2e6 - The Doomsday Machine. Enterprise is tracking wrecked planets when they come on the near-wreck of another Constitution class starship, the Constellation, commanded by Matt Decker, who they find in aux conn. He relates how this huge "thing" was slicing planets up with an anti-proton beam.. he tried engaging it but was overmatched, and his surviving crew beamed down to one of the planets, which wasn't there anymore. He assumes command of the Enterprise from Spock.

I think if I ever become the depository of another cat or dog, I will name said cat or dog, `They'.

But what about nuking a hurricane?!? OBVIOUSLY Big Weather doesn’t want us to know about that option!!!

I really don't want to think that the American education system has failed so badly that a significant portion of this nation's citizen believe this nonsense. I really want to think that these Americans have somehow become so distrustful of the "institutions" and the "establishment" that they don't even accept basic science anymore.

Either way, it's dangerous, and I mean "kill lots of people and lead America into a Christo-fascist dark age" levels of dangerous. It's so dangerous that I don't think this bullshit should be protected by the first amendment and those so create and disseminate it should be criminally punished.

1st Amendment exceptions: slippery slope there.

Expand full comment

Well what do you suggest? The whole “defeating falsehoods with facts” thing isn’t working.

Expand full comment

There's a difference between `first amendment protected free speech' and `giving these idiots a platform'.

We seriously have a crisis in this country. A crisis of rampant STUPIDITY. And when these STUPID PEOPLE get elected to government, chaos ensues.

"... it would, hypothetically, temporarily slow global warming while we transition away from fossil fuels."

Right, like "transitioning" is what would happen and not like "now we can drive asshole trucks for another 20 years hooray!"

Expand full comment

People hate transitioning, change is Too Much Work. NB people who are said to be "transitioning" are actually staying the same.

ok so this may make people mad but... we have been blaming a 'higher power/authority' for devastating events outside of our control and understanding, ever since we collectively as a species started inventing religions - its just that people don't want to blame their god for the devastating thing anymore, so the government is the next big target. Its always the low information portion of the population that go for this stuff

So, in 2005 when Katrina hit it was just because the govt of the time decided to have some fun? Because it was noted that George Bush's pisspoor response to the disaster was one of the lowest points of his Administration. Why did he order those 'scientists' to mess up the weather at that point? To own the libs?

TBF, Bush was a moron.

There are more practical and probably cheaper ways to try and reverse global warming. Be nice if someone would try them without being sued or threatened with death by the people in the pockets of Big Coal and Big Oil.

I don’t see how saying the Democrats can control the weather is supposed to make any less likely to vote for them.

I mean they’re expecting me to vote AGAINST the party that is powerful enough to blow my house off the map with the flick of a button? Fuck that.
