Nice Times is up.

Is this just "need to fill the news hole" chum to add a little 'drama' or is it a real thing. I used to be ok/neutral about Eugene Daniels but . . .

.

MSNOW: "The signs for El-Sayed in Detroit — and the lack of them — are setting off alarm bells" By Eugene Daniels

Sounds like a situation where Black and Arab community relationships are a problem. On the other hand, if the Black community thinks they're going to have a reliable partner in Mike Rogers, they need to wake the fuck up.

I want to scoff at Lewis’ notion that he could get Republican buy-in for labor rights, but…

Certainly now, it seems absurd to imagine modern Republicans having anything but scorn for the whole notion of a union.

But I sorta get how that’s untenable, how a labor organizer might look for ways to advocate for labor rights that don’t depend on a Democratic government for their very existence.

It’s discouraging to read about how long we’ve been doing that shit…but that’s from a current perspective, decades into a reality where the Republican party has been increasingly obvious about wanting a majority of americans to die in penury.

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Regarding the issues of mineworkers' strikes, this was an issue with Lewis from well before the war. Millions used coal to heat their homes and cook their food, and Lewis could and did inflict hardship with regular mine strikes. It drove many homeowners to convert to fuel oil heat, meaning that the strikes were counterproductive even then. And of course, as Loomis notes, trying to cripple the war effort was almost universally seen as going too far.

It is still relatively early here in the procrastinators time zone, particularly for a Sunday morning, so I just stuck my feet back under the covers and found a delightful pocket of warm. I am going to keep them firmly lodged there while I share with you the wisdom word of the day.

I will not keep you in suspense: DO NOT USE GASKET CEMENT FOR THE GASKET THAT GOES AROUND THE GLASS IN THE WOODSTOVE DOOR.

[looks around at faces stunned by the realization that they hadn’t realized that, that NOBODY EVER TOLD THEM THAT, AND WHY NOT?!?]

My work here is finished.

[squares shoulders, lifts chin, walks away, followed by looks of stunned gratitude]

Antifa Commander's avatar

Of course not!

You use duct tape.

(Note: do not use duct tape.)

As a Bears fan and a sane person regarding vaccines and politics in general, I have every reason to despite Aaron Rodgers. But damn, in his final season, he is one crafty old sonofabitch. He'll go up against some QB half his age and let the kid beat himself with mistakes, while Rodgers calmly nudges his offense down the field to score just enough points and eat up just enough clock. He just now did it again in Paris against the Saints, giving the Steelers first place in the AFC North.

Also, that was the first game I heard Jason Kelce doing the color. I think I might like him a lot as a mic man.

"Ten days that could shake the world: democratic norms at stake in four pivotal elections"

Brazil, Israel, Serbia and the US are holding elections within the space of 10 days. Will the authoritarian right cement its global gains, or can pro-democracy forces make a comeback?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2026/oct/25/ten-days-shake-world-democratic-norms-pivotal-elections-brazil-israel-serbia-us

"Four elections on four continents within 10 days could profoundly reshape global politics, propelling the world further along its current authoritarian trajectory or marking a limited comeback for democratic norms.

In all four contests, basic democratic norms are at stake at a time when autocracy is advancing worldwide at an alarming rate. According to the Sweden-based V-Dem Institute, which uses multivariable assessment tools, the democratic freedoms enjoyed by the average global citizen are down to levels last seen in 1978 – long before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Europe."

How are Bibi's prospects?

Oy!'s avatar

Apparently pretty good (at least so I've read) – and quite shockingly – with a lot of support coming from young Israelis who approve of Bibi's genocidal war and even think he has not gone far enough.

Exciting, huh? Just like being in the dark depths of early WWII. I hate these world-historical times.

Won't the voters decide that?

Blanche on CBS says his suit against Alaska is "asking the court to step in where the Alaska Supreme Court didn't, which is to look at federal law and if necessary to allow a process for Alaska to decide who should be certified as the winner."

I'm so old I remember fascists telling us that if people weren't smart enough to get ID's they don't deserve to vote. Why is it too much to expect MAGA asswipes to be smart enough to figure out which Dan Sullivan to vote for?

Naziferatu Miller was screeching about how Alaskans will be utterly confused by the ballot. Someone posted the ballot on Bluesky and it clearly shows the difference between the Sullivan guys, where the incumbent is identified as "incumbent." 🤔

It also sez that Sullivan is a Repukelican.
