"Life is often more disappointing than fiction."

You betcha. And this is why we need fiction.

Superheroes are fictional. And these days, I don't know which notion is more fantastical: that people could develop super powers, or that people with super powers could ever avoid being corrupted by them.

Time for a 'Smallville' rewatch. I forgot how very good it was when it got away from the "meteor monster of the week" mode. Michael Rosenbaum is still the best Lex in my opinion and the story of his movement to "the dark side" is more compelling than Clarke's story. Thanks for connecting the dots, SER...also you were missed at the Indian Food meetup... food was delicious and I would have let you have the leftovers as a sign of respect! Hugs

I did love that in that episode, Jennings (Tom Wopat's character) says the driver's side door of his car doesn't open because it's just always been like that. A little Duke's of Hazzard nod. LOL

“What [that flag] meant to an eight-year-old, nine-year-old, 10-year-old, 15-year-old John Schneider [was] that we are collectively rebelling … against an oppressive society that pollutes the well where we drink.”

As a 7 year old girl who actual WATCHED the show? I didn't give a damn about a flag. I watched because I thought (at the time) John Schneider was cute (his RWNJ tendencies hadn't shown themselves yet, far as I know)

Another childhood ideal shot to hell. Oh well.

"the people who are close to you will always know what’s truly in your heart”, but a course of Melosarmine injections will clear that up.

I dunno why but comicbook style stories with some kinda allegorical drivel always seem to stink of propaganda. </yellow_kidding_journalism>

My main takeaway from Dukes of Hazzard was the unfortunate popularity of "Daisy Dukes"

As an eight year old from GA I loved the dukes and their car chases sticking it to boss Hogg and Roscoe P. Coltrane. Sadly no one pointed out how black folks might feel about the General Lee.

Bo was the dumb one in the show too.

As a kid I never realized just how bad that flag was as a symbol. I think most of us around here never thought that the Civil War was ongoing. Never figured that people were still frigging sulky about their loss.

We never watched the Dukes of Hazzard anyway because it just never appealed to us. There must have been some other show that my folks preferred on at the same time.

Never watched the Dukes of Hazzard. We did watch Hee Haw from time to time, which I think was going for the same audience.

That is, we occasionally watched the last 5 minutes of Hee Haw. Because it came on right before The Waltons.

It'd be nice if more of the Jonathan Kents in our country realized Rumpis Maximus is the Lex Luther of our story, not the scrappy Small Town Guy.

I've seen a blue Dodger Charger called the General Sherman with the Union flag on the roof, and the horn plays "Marching Through Georgia"

my one celebrity story : mr. schneider came into the bar in which i was the night chef … i was alerted by the waitress who told me he wanted no fuss w/ fans & he would compensate her for her compliance … he got 2 cheeseburgers (our cheeseburgers were huge, no one ordered 2) … & no one molested him during his meal … he left her thirty-five cents …

What a surprise! /s

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I knew a woman who, in her teens, waited tables at a summer resort. The entertainers ran the gamut from cheap and nasty to generous and warm-hearted. One week, Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner were the headliners. They were, she reported, friendly, always polite, funny, and B-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-G tippers.
