For me, the Grand Tragedy of the abolitionists is that no one came up with a real plan for what to do with all the freed slaves. Give them land (or at least allow them to get some), integrate them into the economy, all that. Seemed that giving them freedom was all they had to do; the rest would work itself out..... Riiiiight.

Liberia did not turn out well.

Mike Johnson longs to live up to his example.

Anyone listening to SCOTUS atm? The government made decent arguments and had quality interaction with the justices. The other side's argument sounded like a Trumpian snark/attack. Now the court is asking questions of him.

If you are looking for the PDF:

The case is about whether people under restraining orders can own guns.

Because when do people who have been violent before ever get violent again?

Lefty Wright's avatar

It's ridiculous that the court even needs to hear this case and shows how far the NRA and gun nuts have gotten in their attempts to arm everyone in the country. Of course making gun, gun accessory, and ammo makers a fortune as more and more people die from gun violence and suicide.

The public defender sounds unprepared, like he figured he could just wing it.

That is just my interpretation,however.

Maybe he figured that the fix was already in? At least with the Pious Six?

Out running errands and saw a person that had a tree stand safety awareness sweatshirt*, pants halfway down butt, scruffy neck beard, cap on backwards.

* sweatshirt had image of hunting tree stand and guns and . . . Didn't see long enough to see it all.

Here's my tip on tree stand awareness: Don't drink so much you fall out of the tree.

You're welcome.

They will listen to that advice.

There's actually a tree stand safety foundation believe it or not.

When I saw "tree stand" my mind went to xmas trees and I though "Too soon!"

I was seeing holiday ads on TV before Halloween. It's not too soon.

This country was never going to do something as sweeping as giving plantation holders' land to the slaves, not with the ties Northerners had with the Southerners (it does take a bit of cheek to happily buy cheap cotton for your mills while complaining about the slavery that kept that cotton cheap for you). And even the land we were willing to steal from the Indians was going to go to white settlers first, silly Freedmen!

It might have been feasible to at least provide some compensation to the Freedmen from the Treasury, but there wasn't even political will to do that--the Republicans were split between those who wanted to help the Freedmen and those who just didn't give a shit because they were more into conquering the West and making tons of money. Not our proudest moment!

If Stephen Miller had been alive in 1862, he'd have sued the government over the Port Royal Experiment because it's racist against white people.
