@CripDyke - A belated thank you for this article, as it let me contribute some meaningful information to a discussion on trans health in the UK last night. I was glad to have had it at hand.

You people act like this is a no-brained without any perplexing problems. What about people with penises in women’s locker rooms when girls are 14 or 15. What about chest binders for 13 year olds? To me that’s self-harm.

Hopelessness seems like the key here. Surely Dr. Cass (as a human being with a medical degree) must recognize how her work contributes to exactly that--complex comorbidities be damned, as her oath tells her "first, do no harm."

Depriving anyone, much less vulnerable young folk, of hope of being seen: the definition of harm.

England =/= UK or Britain. There are four NHS's in the UK, NHS England is one of them.

So many "conservatives" let it leak out about every two minutes just how committed they are to pursuing all avenues by which they can tell you how to live and what to think. It isn't about "small government": government can shrink or grow as needed to perpetrate whatever cruelty is on tap this week, or this decade. The question we face today is whether we want the country to be run by an American version of the Taliban or whether we prefer a humane and liberal existence which goes up against cruelty and rigid ideology. A key difference: the holder of a conservative viewpoint wants to punish and condemn others for failing to believe what they're told to believe, or to do what they're told to do. The holder of a liberal viewpoint simply wants to be left alone, and is mostly willing to allow others to believe and do as they wish.

Oh FFS can't they just let these kids transition? You don't know these kids! You're not their guardian, you're not family, you're not in any way a part of their social circle. Their transition won't affect you, so let them be! This is as dumb as banning asymmetrical haircuts for radio personalities: You're never going to be affected!

Jen of Defense (War!)'s avatar

It's worse than banning haircuts. It is denying healthcare and just letting people die.

Imagine a moment a doctor making a waitlist for, say, breast cancer and then starts denying cancer patients because reasons.

This is like that.

I mean it is just as dumb. I didn't judge the morality, I judged the lack of logic. Can I please just call morons morons for the moronity of their actions without also having to point out the obviously evil nature of their evilness?

I word it like this for two reasons:

1. Their evil is obvious, pointing that out (especially here) is preaching to the choir, and if I just wanted to make myself feel good I would do it in private.

2. If the evil ones happen to come upon one of my posts, calling them evil would make them dig their heels in the sand and they would double down. But If I call them stupid, the chance of them stopping their behaviour slightly increases.

So there is no harm in calling them dumb with a very tiny chance of having a positive effect, and there is no upside in calling them evil, with a very tiny chance of having a negative effect.

I see your logic, but with some minor quibbles:

1. In my experience, calling people dumb makes them dig in their heels.

2. On the internet, nothing is ever an obvious point or goes without saying.

3. There have been anti-trans non-comments on this site, so I do not think we can take it for granted saying "denying trans kids care is evil" is preaching to the converted.

But it makes them look good to the curtain-twitching, dot-eyed outrage gymnasts they rely on for their votes.

The closer they get to defeat, the worse they persecute.

They cared about reaching the conclusions they were tasked with reaching. This was never intended as an impartial set of "recommendations". It was a cheap skeleton to hang the flesh of anti-trans legislation on.

I hope whatever Dr Cass got for this fucking hatchet job was worth it.

"The patients who died by suicide between 2018 and 2023 were described as presenting with multiple comorbidities and/or complex backgrounds."

Translation: "Those brats were looney-toons who would have offed themselves anyway, so whaddaya want US to do about it?"

As they say over there: Wankers.

How do you get worse than 16 dead kids? 17 dead kids. Any number of dead kids whose deaths could easily have been prevented, and who were callously and knowingly kept from the thing that would have saved their lives. Easy, isn't it?

Maybe it won't make a difference, but if the Tories get destroyed (hopefully) in the upcoming UK election, Labor will appoint people in the new admin who aren't monsters.

Uncle Betamax's avatar

They won't though.

Labour is currently in the most right-wing configuration I've seen since that bastard Thatcher-lover Blair was in charge.

They'll talk a good game, but if they take power, they'll turn their cloak so fast and so often that it'll need a fucking epilepsy warning.

That would be nice. My hope is that Labour wins enough seats that some people get elected who still have progressive/leftist views.

Starmer is hardly left wing and has surrounded himself with similar types, looking to get elected and not upset the apple cart.

The shadow health secretary, in particular, seems willing to keep trudging the same Tory furrow.

The anti ligature/suicide bathrooms was a thing that the NHS had to install across all sites because a Birmingham mental health unit had 8 people die that way in their bathrooms and its a previous problem across multiple sites.
