1. The ‘Kung flu’ was ‘ethnically’ targeted. Um, okay. That doesn’t make sense even by their own standards.
2. Kids are undergoing mental operations by ‘concerned’ parents over drag queen story hours, and litter boxes in bathrooms as they defend child predators Matt Gaetz and friend of Epstein, Donald Trump.
3. Skipping down… as it turns out, the only person eating pets was a registered republican woman, and not any Haitian immigrant as the lazy media erroneously reported as dutiful stenographers of the reich wing broadcast ecosystem.
Unless and until misinformation is penalized, perhaps even criminalized in especially malicious instances, instead of monetized, our society will become more and more fractured and unmoored from reality. Many dystopian books and theories from years past that felt playfully implausible are becoming far more likely to happen.
The pollution of the truth in mainstream media is a toxic and dangerous reality that went into overdrive in 2016 thanks to Trump and his base. What these dangerous fringes never understand is that when you completely destabilize trust in other people and institutions, nothing and no one is safe. Paranoia stops discriminating, and the batshit nutters will doubt each other just as quickly as “the enemy.” The truth, and our insistence on it and protecting of it is vital to the survival of democracy and peaceful coexistence.
The fringe, the Qanons, the White Hats, the Proud Boys, the 3-percenters, the this, that, the other are all intent on destroying the status quo and any mainstream narratives. But they also war with each other about whose agenda and theories are correct. The Republicans Party has become an extension of these groups, arising out of their mutual need for votes, control and power. It’s an ugly devil’s bargain. The Republicans for years spoke carefully about the fringe, cultivating their support and eventually opening their office doors to them. Now much of the Republican apparatus is controlled by people and groups who believe absurd, untrue things. There may have been a time when the GOP old guard could have turned those more extreme voices away, accepting the political cost. “If we nominate Trump we will get destroyed, and we will deserve it.” - Lindsey Graham, May, 2016. That time has passed, and the nutters are inside the building. Unless both parties agree that misinformation will eventually be our undoing, we are doomed to follow the road of many former democracies who believed they would always endure. With right wing billionaires buying and controlling more and more media, the chance to slow or meaningfully punish misinformation is dwindling fast.
