And meanwhile, the Bloated Yam is calling for immediate execution for shoplifters.

That will terrify 15-year-old girls hoping to snatch earrings across the country. Unbelievable.

The Bloated Yam's solution for everything seems to be to just shoot everyone.

Well, Josef Stalin once said: "People cause problems. Remove the people, and you remove the problem." He sure proved that point.

As I commented the other day, Wal-Mart did not institute "self checkout" because it was more convenient for shoppers (though it is) but because they could save money having one associate overseeing 8 to 10 register rather than paying one person at each register. And I'm sure that they realized that S.C. would result in a bit of "shrinkage" as shoppers either intentionally or inadvertently failed to ring up an item or two. And I'm also sure that they did a lot of test marketing to determine which cost them more; a little shrinkage or hiring more associates. And they decided, apparently, in favor of shrinkage. So I find it just a bit disingenuous that all these big box bastards are now whining

about not liking the outcome.

Mal-Wart further hedges that bet by having cameras on everyone of those self-checkouts, with the monitor staring you in the face. Whether anyone actively watches to see if people are accidentally forgetting items I don't know - I shop there as seldom as possible - but I'm sure the mere threat of if helps cut back shrinkage as well.

Meanwhile, over in the land of non-Wonkettish people but who are sane in their own way --

A police instructor in his book about using deadly force warns that killing someone over property is seldom legal and (he was addressing normal people) something you'll regret.

As I've opined often......."what was the underlying crime that deserved a death sentence"? If this was a cop that choked this guy out, we would scarcely hear about it......another day in Killville 'Murika.....Ho Hum.....

Robyn is spot on about the assessment that shoplifting is NOT a capital offense, and is NOT an epidemic....

when i worked for my father at his gas station he told me "if someone comes in and demands the money, give them the money . . . it'll be cheaper than paying for getting you fixed or buried."

[ i think he was kidding about that last part . . . i think ]

He was not kidding about that last part. Funerals are incredibly expensive, and I'm not even taking into account the emotional toll of losing a child.

I was expecting guns to be involved here but surprisingly they were not.

Second degree murder is intentional -- the accused was actively trying to kill the victim -- but not premeditated. See https://www.justia.com/criminal/offenses/homicide/second-degree-murder/

They'd still choke people to death and beat them to death.....

If this dude did a "blood choke" (as opposed to an "air choke" which cuts off breathing by compressing the trachea) on the guy, he could be disabled or dead in seconds, not minutes. Blood choke stops the carotid artery from delivering oxygen to the brain. When doing a blood choke, you MUST release IMMEDIATELY after the body goes limp or brain damage or death could result. Even black belts in martial arts approach this choke with extreme caution.

Of course, newbies in martial arts, nearly all young dudes, are itching to try out their choke skills somewhere other than class. My guess is that this dumbass MFer has done a little MMA training and has zero control in what he's doing.

N.B.: When I was talking jiu-jitsu classes, my sensei lamented that most of the young dudes didn't do traditional martial arts anymore, and all went for MMA. There are a lot of sh*tty MMA teachers out there that are way better at winning bouts than teaching correct form, especially how to not injure your sparring partner.

I had the great good fortune, to train in BJJ with superb trainers, at a dojo that went under during the pandemic.

They were emphatic that a tap meant release immediately, when training obviously.

They were extra emphatic that in an IRL self defense scenario, one must release immediately after loss of consciousness.

The idea is defending oneself is the objective, and killing another person is not the objective.

Because choke holds are dangerous.

So many stores have a policy of NOT attempting to stop shoplifters. I guess more should now.

Oh yes, I have heard about this before. We have one on my area, and a new one it being built about 5 milles in a small town nearby that does not want it there cause of local businesses. They point that there is no real need but the real estate develeoper wants to mega-screw the town anyway.
