The Molly Maguires began in Ireland before their members immigrated to the United States. In both places, they became known for radicalism (in Ireland, primarily over land tenure issues)

So much of Irish history has involved control of the land. On any cold day in Chicago I can remember my born in Ireland great grandmother saying that it was "Cold as a landlord's heart." It took me a while to understand that she wasn't talking about Mr. Kwicinski who owned the three-flat where we rented an apartment but the absentee landlords--all of them English, of course, whose ownership of thousand of acres created the basis for the mass migrations of the dispossessed from rural Ireland.

When you read the article, they make sense to each other. They're both so perfectly awful.
